Civil War Poems: The Field

The field was vast and beautiful
Some trees grew far away
Beyond them lay a marshy stream
Where little boys would play

Daisies, violets, buttercups
Wind rippled through the grass
A hallowed beauty, well-preserved
We thought that it would last

Then war broke out among the states
And the boys you used to see
Playing along the riverbank
Joined the Confederacy

A cannon by the peaceful stream
Tents scattered on the prairie
Crushing the once-beautiful flowers
Of the peaceful sanctuary

Boots marching on the tall, thin grass
Shouts of war beginning
The young men fight with bravery
Not caring who is winning

The ground littered with bodies
Of brave soldiers who are dead
I look upon the peaceful field
The green earth has turned red.
