we're free-falling like rubber-bands
when they ricochet off the fingers
of
girls with lips that are
luminous in the sepia night glow
of the television set.
thinking,
once i killed a butterfly and
wondered if its fluttering wings caused a nuance
in antarctica.
once
i dreamed the impossible when i was awake.
once
i held someone i loved in my hands
and suddenly they were gone.
blasphemy and mistrust
are mundane spirits and thin mouths
like spider veins and
narrow minds
black eyeliner bleeding through pillows.
screaming "back off"
at men in threadbare robes.
i kissed an agelast and he cried.
you know i'm lying to you.
right?

All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on.
