FAMILIAR SOUL
I looked in your eyes, I’ve seen them before
the eyes of a comrade that died at my side in war.
The eyes of a babe I held to my breast
that wrenched my heart when I laid you to rest.
Weren’t you the one who shared my childhood play
that I cried so hard for when they took me away?
And wasn’t it you I laughed with in the springtime rain
as we rode our horses across the wide open plane?
And didn’t we once when the earth was wild
stand in awe at the miracle of our newborn child?
And didn’t we hold hands and face the sword
and give our lives in the name of the Lord?
I’ve known you before, I couldn’t be wrong
many times together we’ve sang life’s song.
Many times we’ve laughed, many times we’ve cried
and, yes, more than once together we’ve died.
When I look in your eyes don’t I see
a spirit so familiar to me?
Didn’t we dance together across the sky,
grabbing at clouds as they went dashing by.
And didn’t we merge together and as one
send forth a light as beautiful as the setting sun?
I have looked in so many eyes to see
if I could find a soul so familiar to me.
The moment I looked in your eyes I knew.
And crawled inside and wrapped myself in you.
What did you think

Welcome to Allpoetry
This is absolutely amazing. I love the word choice, the rhyme and the way that every stanza seems to reach out and grab the heart of the reader.
