When I was 21

“You’re not supposed to look nice!”
dressed up like a St. Trinian’s schoolgirl
for the fair
in aid of charity
with hair in bunches, painted on freckles, front-tooth blackened out, mini-hockey kilt
but I still looked too nice;
howdoesthatworkanyway?
It’s not fair!

I still look nice now
even knowing about the BT’s

It takes no effort
to look nice
as it comes from within

    Yes!!! I loved this. Your last stanza makes this poem what it is. GOOD.
