Celebrate Our Independence

With dusk comes the smoke
of black powder, the sulfur
smell that fills the air; fire
and light fill the atmosphere -

No wonder it inspired Francis
Key as incendiaries flew, showing
our flag, our cause...our cry for
freedom still rang through the air.

Very proud I was last night to
participate in our neighborhood
fireworks display, though less
grand than some of our neighbors,

I felt proud of our country that day.
Lady Liberty is lovely indeed, but
what she stands for is even more
lovely, more touching than words.

We celebrate a rallied cause, though
that day cost us ten year of war to
establish our new, own country...
and how still it is the next morn' -

We celebrate with giddiness and glee,
whether from happiness of our status
as free men and women or lighting off
the fuse; drinking in the wine of liberty,

We have a peaceful morning July 5th,
with some pretty sore heads and ears.
A small price to pay, when you remember
our flag was designed with particular colors:

Red for the blood that was shed to
secure our freedom; blue for the tears
that were cried by the mothers and wives
of those who fought and died...

And white, well - it can mean many things,
stars and all, but one thing it doesn't mean
is weakness, surrender, and complacency
in the strife for independence from tyranny.

  • Nice! A wonderful take on the fourth of July! I have seen many attempt to express this, but never have I seen success! It made me feel like I just watched the fireworks again, with much more pride!

  • I Like this

Freedom is something I think we take for granted. I mean I wonder how many of us stopped and thought about our service men and women on Saturday. I can say I did briefly but not as much as I should have. Its because of them that we can wake up on the 5th worry free and hung over! Our independence is tested daily and they keep us safe from harm and to them I say thank you!!!! Thank you for writing this and all who read should say a little rayer for them tonight!!

  • "drinking in the wine of liberty," I like this line.
Fireworks are a toast to our heritage, and our liberty.

White for purity of conviction, perhaps?

I remember watching fireworks from the shore in White Rock, BC, Canada going off in Blaine, Washington on July 4th, the years we lived there.
