natural selection

I'm a big fan of the D man!

                                                  --God

I'm glad to see that you evolved!

                                                               --Darwin

Been thinking ‘bout this love affair;

the evolution of it clear: you and me here

watching it evolve from friendly chatter

to a blathering of handshakes (which

quaked my very soul) then a loss of all

control when first our lips

stopped yapping...  and kissed!

Yes, Darwin had it right,

I think as I mumble a goodnight,

My dear desire and affection

smacks of natural selection.

There can be no one but you for me!

Like all the other monkeys in the tree

I totally agree... you are one hot primate!

Author notes

"What a book a devil's chaplain might write on the clumsy, wasteful, blundering, low, and horribly cruel work of nature!”

An Existentialist might say, "Darwin also got it wrong."

Please, comment as you will.

      Hee!

thanks, ea! I am both embarrassed AND proud of those lines...

  • This just made me smile all the way through. the rhyme is excellent in my opinion, the ending made me laugh, and it is a nice twist on the prompt. Thank you for entering this.

I really did try to be serious about the whole idea... and have written a few on the topic of existence, but with this and all the other poems I've penned on the subject... I just can't keep a straight face! Being a 61 year old guy who has chained smoked since he was 12 AND abused "the grape" almost his whole life (haven't drank in 10 years), it's hard to think of my life as a "survival of the fittest"
poster child... yet, here I still am! Hee! Great contest, WC! Glad I could be a part of it.

  • Not just good but "damn good." Very well put neighbor insightful and entertaining - a winning combination.

Good luck in the contest and happy trails.

Thanks, DW! Yeah, I like trying to do both... in my weird way!
