The love we had
Was once a thing of beauty
But the hourglass bled
Its grains of sand
One by one through an unforgiving heart
The walls we built grew too high
For the other to ever get close
Layers of pain, heartbreak and disappointment
Led to suspicion and deceit
It was too late to save what we were
Or all that we could have been
The chasm widened too far
For either of us to mend broken bridges
The room we left each other
Is what tore us apart in the end
All I can do is bury it deep within
And hope you do the same

This is not exactly what I was looking for with the overused dark imagery and a cliche topic. But thank you for entering anyway.

I loved the richness of your metaphors and am amazed at how well you have captured thoughts similar to those I had when creating this contest. Bravo!
