A Time to Mend

Missing image
The Great Spirit created all things.
We should endeavor to learn from all creation.
Talk to the animals and listen to the wind.
What we talk to and listen to we understand.
That which we do not understand, we fear.
That which we fear, we seek to destroy.

It is a good belief that all things move in a circle.
If you stop and think you will see this to be true.
The power of the world works in circles.
Everything strives to be round.
The earth is round, the wind swirls,
birds make their nests in circles,
even the seasons form a circle as they change.
In the circle there is strength.

Once the circle was broken all things changed.
Man forgot he came from Mother Earth,
he forgot that Mother Earth sustains him,
he forgot to give back what he had taken.
He has pierced Mother Earth’s heart with his pride
and belief that he is above all things.

If you truly seek to sit within the Great Circle
you must understand that all of creation is related.
That the hurt of one is the hurt of all,
just as the honor of one is the honor of all.
Whatever you do affects all of creation.
If you truly join your heart and mind in unity,
whatever you ask for is the way it shall be

I believe there will come a day when all men will join together,
sick and tired of the suffering and seeing with true eyes what they have done.
We will gather in the shadow of the Tree of Life
and the earth shall become one circle again.
All men will find the center within themselves.
Light will return to man’s eyes again and he will gain true understanding.
When this time comes, we will all sit within the Great Circle and live as one.

The Great Spirit, our Grandfather, will smile upon us then.

first of all, the presentation of your poem is truly graceful, I love the border and the featured picture ... I have read your verse a few times, as I use to when I hold a contest, and each time, a different insight was integrated ... the words that touched me most were speaking of "(man who) has pierced Mother Earth's heart with his pride and belief that he is above all things", and reminding us that "the hurt of one is the hurt of all, just as the honor of one is the honor of all."

your final stanza sounds like a prophecy, one that bestows faith and hope ...
it wisely offers the key to peace: "finding the center within ourselves" ...

a poetic masterpiece of wisdom and gentleness,
    thank you so much,

  • very beautiful thoughts
the circle of life, that flows effortlessly
vibrant circles unseen energy its what creates all that we see it holds us down to earth, a complete circle
unity all is in unity and harmony, we intrude on the flow of life, we take from each other and from Mother Earth, we create imbalance.
to bring balance back, we need to give more then we take not only to Mother Earth but to each other.
Light will return to man's eye again and he will gain true understanding
after reading your beautiful poem I believe it is already happening
    a pleasure
your ending brought me a great big smile
    I love happy endings
    God bless you my friend...

This is a very special piece of faith and hope. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if the white man hadn't disrupted the lives of our native ancestors. Being part native American Indian I often feel the meaning and purity behind the mind of our Indian brothers.

I hope we haven't messed up the world beyond redemption. It's a beautiful place if we allow it.

I wish you best in the contest

  • there's great wisdom in these words, and I too hope the day will come when the circle can be mended. The last two lines of the opening stanza are particularly strong for me. Wisdom comes not only from understanding, but also from the realization that we cannot and will not grasp all that surrounds us. Another fine write.
