When You Were There

When you were there, you brightened my day,
With every thought that came my way.
You swept away my sorrow and pain,
When I thought I had nothing to gain.

But now you must go and leave me here,
We share nothing now, but a handful of tears.
I don't want you to leave-only to stay,
Can't you see? You just can't go away!

The happiness you bring means so much,
And that is why we must keep in touch.
I'll let you go this time, but remember this,
It's not just the good times, it's you that I'll miss.

Author notes

I dedicate this poem to my father. Today is the anniversary of his suicide on July 2nd. 1981. 28 years ago he told me he was going to give my mom a birthday present she would never forget. I was 16 years old. He told me that he was going to pull into the driveway of our home and leave two letters. One to whom it may concern and the other to my mother and then he was going to shoot himself in the head. I thought I had talked him out of it, but 4 days later I found him in our backyard exactly like he planned it. The day before my moms birthday. Tomorrow is my moms birthday. I miss you dad.....

    Wow. This is such a beautiful dedication. I'm so sorry though. Reading the story behind this poem....I can't even describe how it made me feel. I don't think I would have ever been able to make it through what you did. This is a wonderful poem though.

    oh, hun, I remember you telling me about this. your words express such great sorrow and pain. for a 16 yr old to observe such tragic is so awful. I felt every single word and tears slowly slid down my face. excellent write.
