You came to me last night,in a meadow-in a dream,
tail wagging and a smile on your face.
I told you I missed you, you licked my hand.
You looked happy and I was very glad.
I told you about the raccoon and you nodded knowingly,
when I spoke of getting an alarm system
you gave me a look that said "Really"!?
I rubbed your ears you moaned contentedly,
rolled onto your back for a belly rub.
gone were the tumors and malignant masses,
gone were the aching joints and knotted fur.
Jumping up, you cajoled me into a game of tag
and I willingly darted to and fro
trying to grab the tip of your tail.
A rejuvenated you yipped and pranced
your way to an easy victory.
Suddenly you turned to a call I did not hear,
you started away and stopped, looking back.
you whined-turned to another call and were away.
Not sprinting, but at your own pace, as usual,
sniffing as you went and pausing occasionally.
At the edge of the wood you stopped and turned,
lifted your nose into the air and gave me a long look,
then you disappeared into the shadow of the trees.

"gone were the tumors and malignant masses,
gone were the aching joints and knotted fur."
A year is approaching to the date my dog died (Jul 22, 2008). She was 13 1/2 years old. She was a wonderful pet. The lines highlighted above depicted the ailment that took her away, almost to the letter. I loved the imagery written here Terry. I could see your doggie (my girl too). Thank you because I know your poem was just as much for me as it was for you. I know she's happy now. My daughter and me had a discussion. We were wondering if dogs, pets in general go to heaven. I think they do. Some say they don't because they have no soul. I disagree. The only difference in animals and us is our ability to make decisions and speak. I think there will be all sorts of animals in Heaven. But I guess we'll all just have to wait and see. I am sure it doesn't matter but as a mere mortal, I would be hurt if there were none.
Excellent poetry here Terry. Thank you for this!
Always ♥
Renee

As with any work of art you know what you want for an end result & will be happy when you get it. As for this piece here I think it is fantastic. From my standpoint as reader it is detailed, not too lengthy, & packs a lifetime of emotions both happy & sad into one very well written work of art! I read it again to see if there was anything "I" would change, & found nothing. If you wanted to touch the hearts of others with these deep emotions, you have obviously done that!

Condolences for your loss my friend
Over the years I have given up 3 dogs and as many cats.
All were friends and left many happy memories with me as I know that your Roxy did you.
Blessings!
Michael

This resonated strongly with me due to my mindset currently being consumed with loss too. It's really touching and true and as usual your poetic form is strong. I think the best work starts from dreams

I'm sorry Terry, it's like losing a member of your family - our favourite dog's name was Sparky...sorta like the dog Max on the grinch cartoon - i loved him...who else cries with happiness and jumps up all around you, when you enter a room..
