a lifetime without you

She thought about him constantly. Plotted ways for them to be together but each plan fell short. She couldn’t find a way to tell him she needed him.

He was tortured by her. Most of his days were spent staring out a window, wondering if she’d pass by. He couldn’t come to terms with her being what he needed.

His long time girlfriend soon began to wonder why he wouldn’t look at her while they had sex and could see that his interests in her were growing short. She didn’t want to believe it but he showed all the classic signs of another woman and she remained suspicious. They had spent almost a dozen years together and she wasn’t prepared to give up on him. He called her beautiful less and less, and eventually stopped all his usual romantic gestures. She loved him, so she accepted it. He wasn’t tired of her; he had just seen something better.

She dressed up often, went for walks and hoped that she might bump into him. She missed him, as she hadn’t seen him for years even though he was right under her nose. She knew about his girlfriend but, for the first time in years, she was only able to think of her needs and continued to wonder how she might ‘accidentally’ cross his path.

She decided today, Thursday, that she would no longer be afraid. She picked up the phone, began dialing his home number all while her hands trembled but she couldn’t bring herself to push the last few digits. There was a knock at the door and she slammed down the receiver as if she’d been saved by the bell.

She quickly composed herself in the small mirror by the front door. After she was satisfied she opened the door to find him standing there, sheepishly trying to make eye contact. Her jaw dropped open.

He stood there watching her shock. He, himself, could not believe that he was standing at her door but there was no turning back now. He took a step forward to enter her home and she did nothing to stop him.

She shut the door behind him but was unable to find words. She turned around and found his eyes. His distinguished features were even more charming than the day she had met him. She took a step toward him.

He stepped towards her. He met her in the middle and put his hands on her hips. He watched her curiously take him in. He pulled her closer.

She brought her hand to his face and ran her fingers through his hair. She smelled the same intoxicating smell coming from him. She leaned in closer to him...

He tilted his head in to hers...

...and they met. For their, long overdue, first kiss. She quickly pulled away.

‘Where is your girlfriend?’

‘At home, I lied to get away. I had to find you.’

‘But you’ll go back there when you’re done here...’

He cut her off with another kiss. She gave in a bit easier this time and they both knew that neither was worried for the future. Right now they had each other.

After a few moments they broke away from each other. She grinned at him.

‘I’m prettier, aren’t I?’ she playfully questioned. She was determined.

He smiled and winked at her, reassuring that she had nothing to worry about. He leaned in close to her.

‘Could anyone compare to you, little girl?

She smiled and kissed him. She loved that, even after a lifetime’s worth of women, it was her who could have him bending over backwards. He didn’t care though, she was the only one worth his time.

She took him by the hand and began to lead him to the stairs that led to her bedroom. Somewhere he could only imagine being and was now just moments away from. His nervousness became apparent.

Even though she was leading him she was trembling all over. The two were about to spend their first time together-something that both had spent years dreaming about. She pulled him in to her room...

they shut the door
and opened their souls
they lost inhibitions
and lost all control
they felt one another
from inside to out
and these dear lovers
went in without doubt
they took off their clothes
and wore only their hearts
and spent the night together
as if they’d never been apart

The two awoke the next morning with the sun of their faces. They smiled at each other, as neither had been so content to wake up next to anyone else.

‘Don’t you think she’ll be suspicious? You were gone all night...’ she wondered.

‘Well,’ he sighed. ‘You’re right about that.’ A smile came to his face, ‘but you were wrong about something else.’

‘What’s that?’

‘I guess I’ll never be done here, because I’m never going back...’

  • i don't think anybody would ever know the real inspiration, or maybe you do and just choose to believe that it's not something sad but instead something magical.

i like the story better in my head, and i'll write it the same way always <3

  • And I suppose he never did?
I don't think so because I could've sworn I saw him the other day, with his heart proudly hanging from his neck, and her on his arm.
I don't know if I could ever be happier for him.
    And her. (:

this is one of the greatest stories I've read in a long time.
even if its not what I think its about, I love every word.
especially your little poem inbetween & the lines,

    they took off their clothes
    and wore only their hearts
    and spent the night together
as if they’d never been apart

    like.. come on now..
    too much for me.
    you're amazing,
    <3
