That First Look

My heart has never broken
The way it did when you first looked –
I mean really looked – at me.
That look of pure innocence,
Of slight recognition
Of beginning trust…
But most of all,
Of focused concentration.
Your gaze shifted back and forth so often,
Working your poor brain
Beyond it’s capacity –
For if no one in the world,
Not even the wisest man or woman,
Could know who loves you more,
How could you,
Fresh to the world,
Possibly decide?

I’m afraid, my love,
You’ll be thinking about that
For the rest of your life,
And you will never have the answer.
For when I love you most,
Your Dad’s love tops mine,
And when he pulls you close,
Closer you come to me.

Author notes

My fifth poem for Scarlett, my first child. The first four were written while she was in the womb, but this was written two days after she was born about the day after she was born. Her eyes are amazing.
