The LoveFest

I live in a city that has slipped into despair
To say it is a ghetto would be on point, quite fair
I have been in this berg for over thirty years
And to see it in such ruin always brings me to tears
But the one thing that is constant, that still brings joy
To every mother and father every girl and boy
Is 'The Lovefest' which is held in August every summer
And everyone comes out, by the hundreds in number
The premise when it first started was to get couples together
That is why it was called the lovefest and held in wonderful weather
Then it grew and it grew into a family treat
With vendors and rides and plenty fun things to eat
And on Lovefest weekend the city is in her glory
And the visitors who come through don't know her true story
They think it is a fun place, the way it use to be
And when I watch all the goings on, the old city I see
I hear the use to be laughter of the kids playing games
And when something tragic happened, together all of us came
I see the vendors and remember all the businesses we had
I see the families and remember how most households had dads
I see the innocent children playing and remember with pain
That back in the day they didn't belong to a gang
I see people spending money on their children, and think
How now they choose drugs to supply the dealers bling, bling
I have seen many changes, many things and people gone
As I sit and ponder I could go on and on
But 'The Lovefest' is truly that, a festival of love
And it continues to be blessed by The One from up Above
And we forget for just one weekend what this city is really like
And 'The Lovefest' lets our hearts and minds take flight.

Author notes

I selected number 6 because this festival I speak of is one of the best times in the city.

How nice to have such an event in any city; brings out the best in many, where they forget the bad things that are happening and dwell on something better for a while. Liked the rhyming couples used here, the flow and the detailed picture you present of your city at this time of year.

I don't know which city you speak of, but it could be any city in the world now. And it seems to me that the only way to take arms against the trashing of our homes and lives is to love, more.

The emotion and strong feelings behind this poem are well conveyd throughout its course, the rhyme scheme in the first half of this poem is perfectly suited to the context of the poem. It conveys the feeling of love and how everything seems to burst into song. Then the way the poem flows into free verse is apt for the way you describe how the city if after this festival. It picks up the pace, and then slows is back down again as you return to your original subject of the 'Lovefest' and remember the true emotion behind it and return to a rhyme scheme again and give it another smooth feel to it. The overall poem is very very well laid out and shows you either must have put a lot of thought into the poem or you must really feel strongly about how important this festival is to the community, how it brings families back together for a short period. Thank you for your entry.

Well done and good luck in the contest.

This is really a beautiful poem...vivid description and you pour so much emotion into it. I really love it. It's beautiful, and the flow and rhyme are perfect - not at all forced. XXXX
