Meet the Guys, July 2009

At dawn or dusk
or under the midnight moon,
I listen to the leafy greens
singing an herbal garden tune.

It may just be the water spray,
the droplets gently falling,
or it could be our conversation,
verdant life mysteriously calling.

If you entered on the scene,
you might hear each introduction,
the boasts of culinary superiority,
hints of herbal power seduction.

"Hey, never mind those all-green herbs,
look at us, the first tomatoes, Early Girls,
protected nightly from early June frost.
Now please protect us from the squirrels!"

"Over here, inhale, inhale!
Check out my variegated green,"
calls out the pineapple mint, "and peppermint,
spearrmint and aromatic lemon ciitrine."

A chorus of soft sounds breaks through the night,
"Salad makings, red leaf and gentle bib lettuce,
brightly colored edible nasturtiums, chamomile flowers,
sweet stevia, enticing fennel fronds and sage, just look at us!"

"Hot peppers here, to spice your life,
bring lovin' heat, and buds to show
for peppers green and red and banana,
all in harmony under angelic guard, just so!"

"Fuchsia, purple, lime and orange,
complement in harmony, each on lease
within our space, accenting spicy greens
and zesty herbal tastes, all in peace."

May we learn from imagined nature's voices
to coexist with zest and love, making peaceful choices.

Congratulations M-C on winning SILVER in our contest.

    Love Joan

  • I think we are on the same page on this.....lol....it is funny but our plant life does talk to us sort of speak. I often tell friends about their plants to just listen and they'll tell you what they need. Never mind all that... I enjoyed the imagined conversation you had going on with these beautiful creations from nature. 2 years ago I had a jalapeno plant growing on the balcony and had a problem with the squirrels eating my tomatoes and digging through my herbs. Although I had a struggle with them munching on the other plants they only ate one jalapeno off of the bush and I never had another problem with them messing with it again! Hahahahaha! Poor squirrel probably ran around for hours praying for relief! Your pictures are absolutely refreshing. I love fresh veggies. Now I am craving salad....thanks!

So it was a squirrel! This is the first year I've had a digger,
front and back, in the tomatoes, the flowers---and most
puzzling of all, in low, round planter containing bib and
leaf lettuce, chives and lemon balm, sitting in the middle
of a patio table---a high, round, with smooth legs patio
dining table. Thought it might be a bird, but a lot of
dirt sixpolaced!!! Or a chipmunk? My hot peppers are
      only buds right now!

      Passing the salad---

      M-C

      • yummy! thanks for the salad! lol! Go to the store and buy some jalapeños and scatter them around the plants and herbs you want to be safe from the squirrels and it should keep them out. All they have to do is eat one and they won't dig around again. At least that was my experience with the pepper plant. It's worth a try.....

    Dear M-C,

Oh! I could spend such happy hours
    among your herbalaceous bowers
    inhaling each plant's different scent.
No cause for frown of discontent.

And who would look at me askance
if I, in converse with your plants,
should pause and, with admiring gaze,
offer to each soft words of praise.

To tell, but not from guile or duty,
each how I do admire her beauty
and laud each for her power to sweeten
the food that shortly will be eaten.

For, ere I leave your garden walk,
with each plant I would wish to talk.

Oh! A pox on Kevin's Anonymous nonsense which deprives me of the joys of your illustrations which, however, from the imagery you provide in your poem,
I can sere in my mind's eye.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)

    • Oh, Hugh, with your bountiful gift of words
you would charm each tender green spray
into a fantastic spurt of fragrant growth
      day upon day upon day!!

Thank you, Hugh, for describing your imaginative stroll.
Be sure to sign out and come back in so you
can see all the glorious greens!

Your greens are gorgeous! I enjoyed listening to their conversation, very refreshing

    • I wish I could pop them right through
the screen to send some to you, Mari!!

      M-C

  • Beautiful garden you have going on there...here in Florida all I can get growing in summer is weeds and they are prolific now the rains have watered them and the sun is warming them...the veggies have withered and gone to garden heaven...

Oh did I mention the verse is good also.. Good luck in the contest...

    • Hi, Darlene.

The advantage of container gardens---no weeds!
Wide range of temps---June spanned early weeks
with frost warning to late June in the 90s!

Awe, sorry for you r veggies!
Very dry this summer---rain has not appeared
for many days. Containers need watering
      every day!!!

      Thank you for your comments.

Your garden sounds, and looks, absolutly wonderful. And what a delightful way to let us see and taste all those wonderful herbs and all. I could survive on just your garden alone. I love fresh picked tomatoes, vegies, herbs, anything.
A beautiful entry and I wish you best of luck in the contest

    Dee

    • Hi, Dee!

The tomatoes are a sneak peak, Early Girls,
for the other others have a long way to go.
Thankful the herbs are happily giving1

Mmmm....really nice imagery (sp?).....and nice pics considering they're from a cell phone cammy, though some of those are better than the old ones i must say...

    • I have a new cell phone this year, but use the one I've had
for two years for the pix. The new one required a different
connector, so I took the easy way out!

      A+ on the spelling!

    Delightful

Dear M-C, what a wonderful garden, to actually see what you talk about is fantastic and I LOVE the Angel amongst the beautiful flowers. I believe the plants talk and sing to each other and the Angel joins in with her angelic voice.
    Love it my friend.
    Love Joan

    • Well, she is not the "sweetest angel"
but lends her aura to the scene!!
I was so happy to be safely back home
that I just had to get my guys on the page,
so I could look at them and marvel that
I acutually got them all planted this year!

Beautifully shared! The products of a fertile mind and a green thumb!

    • Right, John---have to take time
      to "fertilize" the mind---
      to infuse it with color,
      fresh aromas and the
      art that one can create!

      Thank you,

So, do you really think these things talk to you?

Well I don't have a lot of use for the herbs so pass me the tomatoes and peppers! No way those sissy herbs could battle a big robust Beefsteak tomato!

Lovely photos...the tomato plants are getting large!

    • Talk to me? Of course, the tomatoes say,
"Hey, Mom, figure out how not to let our
leaves turn all yellow this year as July
passes by and August turns the page!"

Sissy? Your taste buds would jump to attention
if you had that spearmint on your salad,
the oregano and rosemary in your pasta!
And basil would forgive the damage of
a loaded pizza. No happier tomato
than one dressed with a smattering
      of fresh herbs!

In a week's time I believe the romas
and sweet 100s, in the earthboxes
against the brick wall, have grown
another foot! They are also the
background for this page. The ban
      on black backgrounds forces me
to greater efforts to get the
      effects I want!!

      The drawback to containers---tomatoes
won't get as large as those, like yours,
planted in the ground---so I plant
      samller ones to begin with!!

Half strength Mira-Acid (for Rhodies/Azaleas)...blue box...Miracle-Grow's cousin. Try it on one first (just to make sure) before or at the first sign of yellow. My guess is it should work. Another thing I saw in my travels relating to container gardens is to mix some natural granular 5-10-5 fertilizer in the pots weekly or biweekly

Ah yes, I didn't think of that! I bought some American cheese with horseradish. A bit strong but it has grown on me. I know, it's just processed cheese, but I like American cheese.

                • Grown on you! Like cilantro, perhaps.
                  With horseradish--like living dangerously!!
My hot peppers are growing soooooooooooooo
                  slowly, one bud!

                • The best kind is made with milk,
                  more nutritious and tastes better
than made with oil. But if it melts
                  all gooey and browns---then it's
                  done its job!!!!

Here is a dream of mine: I always wanted to go out and buy a sample of every kind of cheese I can imagine and just sit down and taste them. I know, that is impracticable for many reasons including health and digestion, etc but it sounds great, little blocks of like 100 different kinds of cheese, lol

See, I have very simple dreams...well I have bigger ones, this one is easier right now to think about.

Got to run. Order a veggie pizza, then you'll feel less guilty.

                    • You meed to find a cheese tasting event!
See, a reason to come to the Dairy State!

                      Take care!

        • My buddy suggested Pizza for Sunday night,
as a wild departure from good health and to
save me stress from my usual marathon of
cooking sessions, just making a big salad
to compensate for the excesses! Would you believe
that Ms. Queen of Greens also got a bad report card
for cholesterol. It's as some of alternatives say--it's
not what you eat, it's what your body makes! I live
on all the good stuff, salmon three times a week,
luxuriate in salads and veggies. Go figure!!1

Did you do poorly on your cholesterol test? Wow, yeah, it has to be more than just what you eat. I refuse to check mine, when I have to I will, until then, ignorance is bliss.

            • Thought it was done in December,
but never heard and then finally
asked for a print out. Not even checked!
Just done last week in my fainty,
              heart-beating state!

A shame, the things that do well to lower
are also the ones that could cause havoc
              with that rat poson, warfarin.

M-C, Your poem and pics' are scrumptious, delightful and de-lovely. Your garden obviously brings you much pleasure. I wish that I had the energy and stamina to at least grow some tomatoes! Best of Luck in the contest!

    <3 Maureen

    • Hi, Maureen!

My tomato secret, getting the grreenhouse-started
big plants, and just have to pop them in a larger container.

The ones against the brick wall are from the garden center,
planted in Earthboxes, with a water drainage system.

My other secret, motivated family and friend to bring out
      the heavy planters.

Oh, I wish your energy could miraculously be boosted!
This spring I was in this exhausted, fainty stage, so
family went to the garden center and we shopped
      "together" via call phones!!

If you check our "Of butterflies and Hearts"
      http://allpoetry.com/poem/5486613
you will find something familiar in the
top picture----as one of the few here

  • WONDERFUL!

  • What a lovely way to share ...

your garden and all that grows there. It must be just heavenly and quite the salve, so to speak, to cure what ails ya'! You get a big atta' girl from me for staying up with the youth and the latest technology - for I sadly admit to falling quite behind. No cell phone yet! No tweet, no twitter, no face-book .... etc....... You go lady! joy

    • My favorite time is night under amber spotlights!
Ah, the handy cell phone, particularly nice for
lengthy long distiance calls---paying the plan
less costly than all the long distance charges
at AT&T! Convenient for garden pix, too.
With the first use two years ago I was happy
the picture quality translated so well!

Of course, it was politics that got me to Twitter,
followed the Hillary campaign, but not under real name,
used the same screen name as here.

Back to cell phone---good to have with you
on the road---on wheels or foot! Safety
      precaution!

      Thank you, joy,

      M-C

  • your message is brilliant you know
    as is your garden
no surprise to see such lovely harmony of the senses there.
what a lovely feast my friend
    so glad you shared
I have that angel in your picture
I always very grateful to read your lovely creations
    God bless you my friend...

    • Thank you, Kathy.
I was determined to get these to the page
so I could enjoy them and be happy that
I acutually got them all planted this year.

The same angel! Found her in a garden catalogue,
of course, made in China, like all other such
garden sculptures!! She is weathering to show
the pink under the top layers!

Great message from the "imagined" voices. Nature provides many answers if we take the time to observe which you obviously do.

A diversity of plant life living side by side in harmony. Each a different spice adding flavor to the dish and to life.

A fragrant work of art here, Aes.

    • When watering the scents rise upward.
Ooops, I just realized I missed the rosemary!

It's so peaceful in the darker hours---now that the June bugs have departed.
But the moths still like to flit about. And during the sun hours the assorted
population of bees, hornets and wasps can rule---while I am safely tucked away!

Ah, if only peoples of the earth could live so harmoniously!

      Thank you, pix!

We didn't have many June bugs this year. Maybe all the rain has something to do with it. When we do though, Ginger likes to catch them which is quite comical.

So calming when the herbal scents rise from water or brushing. Sometimes I just run my fingers through the foliage inhale deeply and sigh. Yeah, it's that good. lol

        • Oh, when the cherry tomatoes arrive---impromptu salad
on the fly when watering!!! Those plants grew another foot
