Goin' Down Real Slow (*Playin' the Blues)

.

Pretty Mary Moonshine- paddled down the churning stream.
It hurts me so to see her float away.
I reckon I won't be spinnin' Mary anymore,
ain't nobody always believes in forever and a day.

She used to be my little brown girl
even though my clothes were always dirty and torn.

Somewheres else I reckon she'll live,
and sometimes I wish I never was born.

The river runs slow-
and she goes down slower
with minutes that should have been ours...

Just one more sip of her lovin' will only make you want more,
for a second I wished the river'd flow the other way.
But my baby be happy when she find her daddy.

I hates when the skies are gray.
That's why I stay so blue.

The hills must be on fire,
flames dance higher with the moon
on the cold, cold face of the river.

I'm gonna take that old highway,
and I won't be comin' back.
I'll be goin' down slow brown baby, there is no easy ride.
I can't live on maybe,
you'll never find me near the clack of the track.

I got on a streetcar and all I gots was off.
You won't catch me standin' at the station waitin' on number nine
when my two feets are workin' just fine.

If you wanna find me I'll be shining some shoes.
When you gots nothin' down in your pocket,
I reckon you gots nothin' to lose.

So, I'll be goin' down real slow,
this golden sax will help pay my dues.
It's just another day since she's gone away,
When things go wrong Imma play my blues.

Just one more sip of her lovin' will only make you want more,
for a second I wished the river'd flow the other way.
But my baby be happy when she find her daddy.
I hates when the skies are gray.
That's why I stay so blue.

*sigh* You know I'm going to say it's probably too long, could be more succinct and all that.

Love the image in the first line, but the dash seems a bit off.

This piece might deliver nicely as a song, but as poetry your description's a little clichéd. I like stanzas 3 & 6 - you've squeezed imagery in!

I think it's the whole waitin'/lovin'/standin'/workin' thing that irks me. I feel distracted because of the words not being typed out in their entirety.

Not my cup of tea, but thanks for entering!
