A Gentleman of the Gypsies …

While rye is a grass that will make fine bread
It is also a grain that makes whiskey,
And last, but not least, it’s also the name
For a gentleman of the gypsies!

Eat, drink and be happy
Each day is a feast for a dream
Love, laugh and be thankful
For the fields of rye standing green!

Over the river, out on the grasslands
The gypsy wagons are circled around,
Up rides a stranger who’s tippin’ his hat
Askin’ directions to the next town.

Eat, drink and be happy
Sit down with the Romany
Love, laugh and be thankful
For each day will be one more to see!

A full moon is shinin’ a fading sky
Music is playing - the fire burns bright -
Out on the prairie a lone wolf is bayin’
While that cowboy sits feelin’ just right.

Eat, drink and be happy
Each night is the close of a day
Love, laugh and be thankful
It’s just life in a different way.

While rye is a grass that will make fine bread
It is also a grain that makes whiskey,
And last, but not least, it’s also the name
For a gentleman of the gypsies ...

Excellent story telling. Well rhymed. Excellent choices of repeating lines. I tripped up a bit on the meter in the third and fifth stanzas. Loved the intro/ending stanza!

Congratulations on the silver. Just maybe a little of that stereotyped resentment of gypsies is tainted with a pinch of envy. As always, your words flow smooth and easy and are a pleasure to read.

    Sincerely,
    Leo Long

  • Oh, joy, you have captured the mood and
the lilting spirit of romanticized gypsy life.
The images jump from the page,
"While that cowboy sits feelin’ just right."

A rhythmic joy, indeed, created by joy!!

Goerge Borrow's Romany Rye, right? I think there was a play based on it too. I read that and Lavengro ages ago, but need to read it again, been far too many years.

But as for the poem it is light, pleasant, optimistic. You've captured a spirit, not only of the gentleman gypsy but of a way of life more need to follow, at least in concept.

I have in my head, that rye can make bread
To me that seems such a waste
Life would be fine if they would take mine
and give it that fine malted taste

A great little piece that i enjoyed immensely
    good luck in the contest
