A daughter they did have
a way yonder back then
with husband off to war
just like all the other men
And labored these two did
under the blistering sun that shone
by mothers side the girl was always
never at home, by herself, or alone
Potatoes sometimes they dug,
little Rebekah's favorite chore
well, except for feeding the chickens,
which she did so adore
Like her father the Georgia land,
to Rebekah was precious you see
when choosing a planting spot, she'd say,
"daddy would like this one, don't you agree?"
Then when harvest time came,
they loaded up their wooden cart
so proud Rebekah was,
to be like daddy, farming from her heart
Hard it was she worked,
taught so well by her loving mother
yet still a child behind her eyes,
when she chased butterfly's a flutter
But of all these wonderful things,
the most dear to Rebekah, above the rest,
she wore pigtails like once her mother,
and they were what her daddy had loved the best
So when a planting time did come,
pigtails in the field you'd always see
just in case daddy did come home,
for her hero, Rebekah would always be ready
a way yonder back then
with husband off to war
just like all the other men
And labored these two did
under the blistering sun that shone
by mothers side the girl was always
never at home, by herself, or alone
Potatoes sometimes they dug,
little Rebekah's favorite chore
well, except for feeding the chickens,
which she did so adore
Like her father the Georgia land,
to Rebekah was precious you see
when choosing a planting spot, she'd say,
"daddy would like this one, don't you agree?"

Your poetry is truly stunning.
Your rapport with history shines through once again, Dixie. When I read through this poem the first time, I felt as if these words were lifted directly off the photo. It's an extraordinary gift that you have to know just what to write to tell a vibrant story within your poetry. I continue to find your work inspirational.

yet again,pure brilliance
I have to read something by you every time I log on to this poetry site, and I often re read much of the poems you have on here.I always feel I have read the best, and then I find another gem of written genius. All of your work is a diamond amongst gems.I like all the imagery, the pictures you use,the atmosphere all your poetry creates. You are amongst my favorite authors on this site, alongside Alleyson Lashae and Bluesman.Well done, keep writing, and I will certainly keep reading. -

Bountiful~Wise~Uniquely~Beuatiful...
This composition did strike the lights of "the kitchen of my mind" and made me cook history. It broght many chapters of my childhood to my mind's monitor.
I have enjoyed the reading of "Pigtails n' Potatoes"... an exceptional story-poem poem.
Much gratitude to the author of "Pigtails n' Potatoes" for sharing her treasures.
In respect and admiration,
Andre Emmanuel Bendavi ben-YEHU
