[I send this one out to LAIMRA who recently lost 2 cats]
I'm in a state of shock and grief,
Maybe too, some disbelief--
But two friends of mine I found,
On the road--dead--mowed down!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh what a terrible surprise,
That this morning filled my eyes--
Two beloved one form whom I cared,
Gone from me, no longer there!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Suddenly I feel so old,
As I view their bodies cold.
The friendship that we had so long,
Now obliterated--gone!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Am I silly to feel like that,
For I'm greiving o'er two cats?
Yet in their time they came to be
To me just like family.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, it was a catastrophy,
Such a sad discovery!
How quickly from us things pass away,
To darken and distress our way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bear with me, and let me tell,
Of these friends I knew so well.
Special things of them, I recall,
Cherished in my mem'ries now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
KEKE's entrance was unique,
One as ferrel, around he'd sneak--
But when another cat had died,
He tamed down, filled that spot with pride!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And faithful too, he's always been,
Through the good times, and the lean.
He was a pleasure as my pet,
I know him, I'll ne'er forget!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GYPSY also came to us,
Showed up one day, without a fuss.
Evidently as KEKE's guest,
His Life and ours so to bless.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GYPSY was sweet and calico,
Bur many a scuffle she would know.
Yet was tough, and tender too,
A classy cat, yes, through and through.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They formed my Welcome Committee,
There at home ready to greet me--
Springing into action, when I drove in,
With a "welcome back!" and a "Where ya' been?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the side yard, I laid them to rest,
Not far from where they showed their best.
How old I feel, brought to such m,isery,
But fore'er I'll cherish their sweet memory!
Author notes
This happened back several years ago, when I was living in Arkansas.
But sharing it here, brought both a tear to my eye, and a smile too!
point out misspellings or things I can improve upon in a kind and friendly way--THANKS!
What a wonderful story of friendship and love you have shared within this poem. Pets can become one of the family and I know the grief of losing one as well. Thanks for sharing.
Thank You, Friend
It is so easy to let those typographical errors creep in. I like your kitty pic. I have a five year old cat that, not quite as yellow as a tabby, looks quite like an older version of the one in your picture.
