As bitter wind rippled
corners of her mind,
each promise fell
like grains of metallic sand.
Her scarf fluttered
between benign images
and harsh words,
tugging at vindication's
porcelain cracks.
Across the expanse
of the swirling river,
her spirit followed,
for she knew not her source.
Yet scaling that fence of defence
seemed as hard as
pulling a rabbit out of a hat.

Uh huh, very clever Gaylene and congrats.

An elegantly written commentary on some situation that is left interestingly enigmatic. On first reading, I cannot claim to understand what this poem is about, or how it relates to its title, but have the feeling that if lived with, it will - like a good abstract expressionist painting - suddenly reveal its significance and sense when the moment is right. And then it will all seem obvious!

OUCH!
Excellent write Gaylene. Gold worthy. Had I known you were the competition, I'd of slunk off to another contest.

I really love the imagery here, especially the second stanza
you have used the words well, and I enjoyed the read! Thank you for entering

a good poem - dark imagery ruffling the character;s hairline fractures of reality, she swims through imagery with her spirit's clothes catching the breeze.
