Standing up to a corrupt regime
speaking out at great personal risk
if only Americans had the courage

Calling a liar on his lies
Demanding the truth from the unwilling
if only Americans had the courage

Refusing to submit to tyranny
rising up against injustice
if only Americans had the courage

Knowing the price that they will pay
and the sacrifices they will make
if only Americans had the courage

for if we did have the courage
we would have overthrown this hypocrisy
several elections ago
instead of watching quietly as our rights are eroded

we should be ashamed of ourselves
for not having courage
like the Iranians do.

    I'm afraid I disagree ...

    with montez here. I don't think you've done so badly with this. It's true that the Republicans stole the previous two elections and got away with it, so we should be ashamed of that, but we managed to get a decent President this time, and who knows, maybe some of the really nasty things done by Bush will get undone.

    Anyway, this isn't what I asked for in this contest, but I like it anyway. However, I can't give you a trophy here, even though I pretty much agree with you and what you said.

    a simple write with a simple message within a simple mindset, which the more shallow among us will criticize;

    but despair not, for, every four years this country can swing in an opposite direction, befuddling enemies of individual rights and values with that old one-two punch of "the carrot and the stick"-
    when America is attacked as a stick, it can transform into a carrot, and vice versa, making liars out of its critics...

    So, right now, America, the carrot, has stirred the hopes and dreams of those who challenge their overlords, while exposing the overlords for what they are; while America, the stick, keeps such overlords in check...
