Final Beatings

Spring rain mingles with teardrops.
Lightening smears the sky.
Storms come and go.
You stand in front of me again.

Summer beams fade to fall.
Memories flood back for us both.
I witnessed a crime.
You the spy, came for me.
Ordered to love me.

Yet, didn’t you once wonder?
Those late night talks
And walks of lovers.
Those were just lies?

Look what you’ve caused.
Just look at me now.
Lying here dirty and broken
On the ground.

Your tenderly look
Does nothing for me.
How could you?
You betrayed me.

Does your guilt drive you here?
I hope so because
I’m not going away.

Winter’s blanket encompasses me.
I should have been more cautious,
I’m not weak.
But then I met you...

Mysterious and suave.
Like gravity, drawing me in.
I couldn’t resist.
You still draw me in.
I can’t ignore you,
Even now.

I remember one time
We didn’t speak for two days.
Then I heard a knock on my door.
You with romantic movies
And Chinese food in tow.
You said we mattered.
Just you and me.
I loved the sound of us.

Did you mean it?
Was there a time
When you truly loved me?
Maybe you did…
You visit so often.

Spring thaws the earth
Daffodils and petunias blossom.
Your face lingers over me.
You’ve come every month.

Today you’ve brought
white lilies, my favorite.
Tears still fill your eyes.
We’ve passed a whole year like this.

Beyond these cemetery gates, go.
I was your assignment once.
We tried to run away
But they caught us.

You were only one man,
You couldn’t stop them all.
Now I’m lying here
As you kneel upon my grave.
Go now.

Softly I whisper to the wind
“I forgive you, my love.
I forgive you.”

Author notes

If it looks familar, it is. It's an old poem of mine completely rewritten.

Very sad all around, but it is also a very interesting story that sort of rolls on. The story is interesting enough to draw you down to the end.
