Lily Lies

Can you hear yourself in the mirror?
Can you see yourself in His eyes?
Do you really believe what you’re saying?
Or are you selling yourself lily lies?

A child in the street lies dying,
There’s one who’s holding a gun,
A former mother is crying,
Another’s about to be one.

Child runs with feet bare and bleeding.
Now and then another one dies.
So many babies not eating,
And your scorn becomes food for the flies.

It’s another good day to beat up a gay,
Unless you turn out to be one.
You could find a way to protest the war,
Unless someone proclaims it's been won.

Turn on the tube and take in the news
From your comfy seat on the couch.
Speak right up and protest your views,
To a babe with a babe in her pouch.

Never forget to think up and say
You hate how your government’s run
Then disclaim, ‘fore they take you away
Your words were all in good fun.

Can you hear yourself in the mirror?
Can you see yourself in His eyes?
Do you really believe what you’re saying?
Or are you selling yourself lily lies?

Author notes

Lately, I've begun wondering exactly what I believe in. And moreover wondering why I do so little about it. In fact, sometimes, I find myself believing in one thing and doing quite another. Sometimes the right thing isn't the kind thing.... it certainly never seems to be the expedient or practical thing. Sometimes I wonder if a devine mind would consider expressing an unkind opinion.

I plan to revise this poem: please leave constructive criticism!

You have been thinking deep lately...
Those thoughts you show on your poem, might be the thoughts of so many others. I know that many times I do wonder the same thing, and the more I think about the less I can figure out.

I missed reading your poems and am so happy to see that your ink isn't dry.
    Big hugs
    Mari

WOW, that was harsh and very well done. My favorite line was, "Or are you selling yourself lily lies?" That was great.

Nice to see another piece from you, it's been too long.

    Hugs,
    Tisha
