You were enraptured by her exquisite beauty
Flowing lustrous hair, eyes of aquamarine,
Rosy cheek touched by the light of dawn
With a voice as sweet as the heavens above,
You sang to her the song of your heart,
Wooing her with your music
In wedded bliss you lived
For what seemed a glorious eternity
Then, your darling caught the eye of another,
Who coveted her loveliness
And vowed to make her his own
He pursued her, and she fled
Not knowing that she was running
Straight into the arms of death
She was carried away into the dark abyss below
All that you could do
Was journey down into that bottomless pit
To reclaim your love
The dark king laughed on his throne of ebony
And tried to turn you away
But you played for him a song so sorrowful
That the lost souls wept black tears
The king took pity on your broken heart
At last, you and she were reunited
However, if you dared look back for her,
Doubting her fidelity,
She would be snatched away again
Into the land of the dead
The two of you climbed through the earth
Until the golden sunlight met your eyes again
In joy, you turned to take her hand
Alas, she was still within the dark below
And with a tormented scream,
Straining to take your hand,
She was lost forever
Author notes
This one is based off of the Greek myth of Orpheus, a musician who was married to the nymph Eurydice. One day, she was chased after by an satyr who had fallen in love with her, and in the process stepped on a snake, was bitten and died. Orpheus traveled to Hades to beg her return. He was told that if he looked back after her before they reached the surface, she could not return. Once he reached the surface, he turned back to her, but she hadn't yet made it, and was cast back into the underworld.

Nicely done. Why did you choose to address the poem to Orpheus himself? I wonder how the poem might read, if you were really addressing him.
