A Westwardly Upward Skylark

Missing image
Mollie was just a young girl
of 16 during the Easter Rising -
outbound for America - her voice
was as quietly somber as the moon

hanging over Ireland as she sang
lullabies to my cradled father
and sadly died in Oklahoma's dust
when he was a mere lad of five.

I hear her melodious voice now
from my window in the darkness
of a Californian tree's shadow
and I am reminded of all that I am

and all that she was - Irish - rising
upward from the ashes in a song.

Author notes

Inspired by an old Irish saying, "Up with the Lark" by Bobby Sands, MP, who rose with the lark; his first book and poem was actually called 'The Lark.'" ~Lady Ireland (Dolores Craig).

The lark is "any of various chiefly Old World birds of the family Alaudidae, especially the skylark, having a sustained, melodious song." -Dictionary.com

You always have the most kind and sincere thoughts to share on my work - for that I am grateful to have your Irish voice as my #1 fan, and your self-less heart and soul as my best friend. Thanks again, you made my day!! Peace, love & hugs, Cyn

    Fantastic Write

This captures the spirit of a phoenix with a whiff of Irish freshness and is a delight to behold. Lovely work!

    • Thank you for dropping in!!

I want you to know that I appreciate your thoughtful comments, and look forward to reading your own poetry, as soon as I'm able to make it over there to visit your pages. What you've said here regarding my poem is really ironic, because those are the same thoughts I had while I was writing it. Thanks again, you made my day!! Peace, xx Cyn

Beautifully bittersweet...Reminds me of when my mother brought me to the States back when I was 16. I was feeling sort of sad because I missed the familiar sounds, that is, until I saw and heard swallows, not as "melodious" as skylarks, but comforting just the same...Nicely done

  • such simple four words that your muse has been prompted by but has absolutely flown with.
    great write Cyn.
