I Survived

Everyone asks me what is wrong
they just don’t understand.
Not many people deal with this.
Like I do firsthand.

When people yell, I get scared
and curl up and start to cry.
My sister helps me to calm down,
well she always tries.

She takes me for walks
when my parents start to scream.
We go and look for salamanders
or go and get ice cream.

I have a type of autism
that’s what the doctor said.
Does that means something is wrong?
With me inside my head?

He said that’s why I have trouble
with some everyday stuff.
Does that mean im stupid?
This is gonna be tough.

I can’t do certain stuff,
I need help sometimes.
It was hard to count money.
I liked counting dimes.

My mom said ill have this
even when I grow old.
I need to have someone around
so I don’t get hurt im told.

I feel stupid sometimes.
Some kids pick on me.
Cause I cant do stuff like them
I will one day, you’ll see.

I’ll learn how to cook and clean
and I’ll get a house someday.
With someone who loves me
that can teach me everyday.

I’ll show the world some hope.
Of living with this.
I’ll look back at life
and ill reminisce.

I’ll see all my struggles
and my family by my side.
Now say it with me my friend
through it all, I survived.

Author notes

"Nobody can tell you how you feel, what you think, or what to say. Not even your own mind."

This is about my twin sister, Haily, but written in my point of view. She was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome a while ago. We where young then and i myself didnt really understand. Alot in this poem is true, like the walking and people picking on Haily. It kills me to see her sad. I know Haily will learn to be on her own oneday and she will have a great life. Alot of people dont know what its like to have a mental illness or even live with someone who does. It was hard growing up with Haily, but im learning everyday how to deal. Haily is a fighter. She has come so far. She can cook and do laundry and shes learning to do everyday stuff. Im so proud of her! Ily Haily!!

  • This is a very great write, and you had a good reason to write this poem. I think my favorite part was the last two lines "Now say it with me my friend; through it all, I survived." This was very touching to me, because I have a best friend with Down Syndrome, and he does alot of everyday things as well. I'm glad i read this

  • One of my good friends has Asperger Syndrome. It started as me trying to get him to be normal, it's been 3 years, and now we're just friends. This is a very touching poem. I loved it.
