A Boarding Past

Missing image
They said "Reform School" was the answer to my unruliness.
"They" the all powerful; parents abdicating their duties
to wile away the hours and years nurturing drinks,
raising their voices, teaching us lessons best forgotten.

All I longed for was a friend, a big sister; safety in numbers-
I could see her house from the field, crying dry eyed.
She made banana milk shakes with an egg
and a dash of vanilla heaven, the two of us - What harm?

Yet that fall, after the threats and stony coldness; alone again -
I am passed on like a ratty coat from a pile of cast offs.
At 13, gone are the crumbs of comfort amid the finery;
my own room, cats, books, the music of fine rain,
fragile hope; brittle, bitter dreams cracked and ground.

Boarding passes for life only to those outside its prison walls.
Dark gothic halls, black donned Sisters with averted eyes-
Regimented days, weeks, months in the sad company
of bewildered girl-children, together-alone; Lepers?

What was boarding school if not reform school?
Learning was the culling away of a sweet young spirit
'til blowing grit was more than the remains.....
boarding passes for life yet, inside my aging, wailing walls.

It's not a style I usually read, but I like it and I like the way you incorporated pain into the write with imagery, and showed not tell. The leper part was creative.

I would like to see you in my next round, you have talent for sure.

    Heavens Sake!

Very Powerful Dark images with pain interlaced all throughout! Terrible the thought of wasted youth and days of sweet innocence lost in an institution such a this! Well written.
    Best regards
