Bonded as a lowly slave
He never did complain
Whipped and beaten, bruised and torn
He stood right through the pain
But when emancipation came
He finally was free
To join the Union colored troops
And fight for his country
Through the battle at Cold Harbor
He fought with bravery
‘Till a rebel bullet found its way
Into this soldier’s knee
The battle finally ended
Yet there he still was lying
By the time the doctors finally came
They knew that he was dying
Though many men have fought and died
Few can compare to he
Who gladly fought and gave his life
So his people could be free.
