The cost of fruit still rises,
it's getting out of hand!
I can't fathom these prices,
please help me understand!
Thirteen pounds will buy me
one of these three deals:
they cost the same (cor blimey!)
and make great juicy meals!
Three apples, four bananas.
An apple and five pears.
Three pears, seven bananas.
They all sound pretty fair!
So figure out the prices
and answer me below.
Then when the need arises,
to market I will go!
it's getting out of hand!
I can't fathom these prices,
please help me understand!
Thirteen pounds will buy me
one of these three deals:
they cost the same (cor blimey!)
and make great juicy meals!
Three apples, four bananas.
An apple and five pears.
Three pears, seven bananas.
They all sound pretty fair!
So figure out the prices
and answer me below.
Then when the need arises,
to market I will go!
Author notes
Answer in rhyme for double reward! A token reward of 25 points for the first to find the answer!
This poem is open to critical comments, but bear in mind the rhyme is intentionally forced; it's an experiment in how efficiently a puzzle can be communicated in poetry. And good wholesome fun too.
What are the prices of apples, bananas and pears?

An apple costs three pounds
But a pear only costs two you know
Yet a banana only cost one
So off to the market you go -

Very well done! And I love the rhyme, it made me smile.

Off to market I go!
