The Tavern
She entered the establishment, her heart all a flutter.
Her feet were dead weight, her knees were like butter.
Her first time out alone, no companion,
from another she heard tell of this place
from none other than her own brother.
It looked clean, on the floors was no clutter
hanging behind the bar was an old ship’s rudder.
Probably a famous old cutter.
The smell was one a little strange,
from sharp to sweet did it tend to range.
A songster on the stage was whaling a distressing refrain.
Something about her lover, dying in the blowing rain.
An other picture, one of a woman, what shame.
She had no clothes, of course there was printed no name.
If she agreed to pose for it, it was her shame.
She ask for a table for two,
the waitress reminded her there was no two.
The Lady flicked her finger said "I must have a table for two
You are a servant, I don’t have to please you."
The serving wench held her breath until she was blue
"The Lady replied" I don’t even have to thank you,
but as a Lady and a Woman of Means I do."
"What may I serve you, My Lady, I wish to please you"
"What ever is best a fine red wine will do"
the Lady sat down with much a do.
The lights were dim, the light they cast was of a yellow hue
A man sat alone near her, dressed in velvet of blue,
The britches were tight and came down to
the top of his shining black shoe.
He gave her a friendly nod, meaning "How do you do"
She smiled saying " I am just fine, fancy meeting you"
He excused himself in a minute or two
"Excuse me Madam, I believe I have seen you"
She smiled more alluring
her vision suddenly blurring.
"I don’t think I have had the pleasure"
The man, hat in hand
" May I join you?"
Shifting around to see if
she had been found
she ask him to please sit down.
he told her " Follow me and I will seat you at a table for two"
The wench brought the red wine,
he told her " Kindly refill mine"
She did not decline
although she alone knew his kind.
He would court the Lady of Consequence
to his bed lure her thence.
Rob her of her money and treasure,
then go over the
back fence.
She would see, this Lady of Consequence
she would no longer be known from hence.
The songster was just warming up,
her voice was coarse and so abrupt.
Making sounds like a howling pup
The Lady did decide to disrupt.
She threw wine at the songster and the cup.
The place was crowded, they all did applaud
some women sat in frightened awed.
The songster did not allow to be pawed
Her hips were wide and her shoulders broad.
She was defiantly annoyed.
that man with the rich looking toad.
She had him all nice and thawed,
Her hips were wide and her shoulders broad.
She was defiantly annoyed.

#2 The Tavern
She loved the Tavern ,
did this Lady of Consequence
Even to her did the attraction make no sense.
The people were common, women attire made her wince
However a feeling of well-being surrounded her when she went.
No one there dared to approach her
Everyone wondered why she was there.
She was a Lady of consequence, welcome every where
Three evenings a week she came in with a flair.
The bartender brought a special chair for her Ladyship so fair.
She was always dressed in the latest French style
Her face was painted but she could smile.
Hair upon her head in a lavish pile
As music played she tapped her foot all the while.
Had her gleaming black eyes on a man down the isle
He had also been watching her for a while.
Being a gentleman of the upper crust
Sending the Lady a glass of sparkly was a must.
the Lady slowly consumed the drink
Slowly she arose, began to sink.
The gentleman was there before a blink
Before to the floor she fell in fright
He gathered her up in his strong arms,
out into the night.

The Tavern #3
Lady of Consequence
Snow had started to fall,
a thin layer on the court yard wall.
The gentleman ordered his horse and buggy from the stall.
The Lady had come around, didn’t know where she was at all.
Suddenly she remembered she had a fall,
every thing she could recall.
Who was this man so strong and tall ,
when did snow gather on the wall ,so thick and pure did it fall.
"Just where do you intend to take me?
Did I fall did you see? Do you know where to take me?"
The man said "Lady, you did take some wine an became faint,
I could have left you but I can’t.
I looked in your purse and know your address.
The driver will take care of the rest."
“Oh my ,did I soil my party dress?
It really isn’t my very best".
"Madam you dress is unharmed,
if any one tries to rob us I and my driver are fully armed"
" Rob us, what do you mean"
"Mame in the daylight this place you have not seen,
there are robbers,
cold and mean, my horses are very fast and very lean.
I can out run any robber I have ever seen" Oh my goodness, "
the Lady said. " I was just out for some fun
and could have ended up dead?"
He said " Yes
I can out run any robber I have I have before
" Oh my goodness, "
the Lady said. " I was just out for some fun
and could have ended up dead?"
He said " Yes Mame .
It’s in the papers, if you would have read
" Oh, my " she said " I must get home to bed,
something must have gotten into my head,
the papers I have daily read.
The advertisement of the tavern
made it sound so good and safe ,
I could have been attacked by a rake"
The gentleman had to laugh,
this woman wasn’t wise by half.
He took his top hat and his staff
spoke to the driver, they quickly left.
The gentleman knew just where to take her,
he had looked in the purse to find the name of where.
Never did it occur, in a cheap Tavern he would find Her.
A royal family’s name did she wear,
both gold and silver were in there.
What about the Tavern had attracted a Lady like her?
Was this the kind of life she secretly did prefer?
If so he could show a different world to her.
She was pretty middle aged but thin,
she might enjoy the opium den.
Would she ever come out again?
He might ask her where and when."
She said she would love to be escorted by him,
he had lovely manners, always calling her Mame.
So gently had he set her down,
a nicer man she could not have found.
She didn’t have the pleasure of knowing his name.
He might be wealthy or of some fame,
or perhaps he was just playing a game,
after all a Lady of Consequence was no plain Jane.
He took his buggy up to her door, the snow was falling.
The Tavern #4
Lady of Consequence
The lady announced herself as Lady Mercy Oak Dale,
the wife of the Most Honorable Lord Thurman O'Neil,
A name the gentleman was acquainted with quiet well.
His reputation in the political arena was quiet a myth,
it was said he had a mistress Who’s last name was Smith.
Lord Lamar was a kind man,
The lady’s situation he did understand,
she yearned for the company of a viral younger man,
lucky that he had been the one at hand.
One of the rakes would have mishandled her quiet bad.
He certainly was willing but he was no cad.
The maid was called to help her Ladyship to her room.
She said in passing “ Lamar stay around and come to me soon
” “‘'Oh, '“ he thought she has given me a boon”
, he was not a singer he could not to her croon.
He would take care of Lady Mercy to a merry cockney tune.
Together the might followed the cow who jumped over the moon.
She was seated at her dressing table in
whalebone corset and whit ruffled pantaloons,
in this state of undress she almost again swooned.
Her maid had turned down the bed covers
the canopy was of velvet maroon,
pulled to gather as a curtain so dark would be the room.
He ask if they would be alone for an hour or more,
she said yes her husband preferred a whore,
she left him mussed and very sore.
He never came to her bed anymore,
wouldn’t even come inside the door.
“So” he said My life I will not have to protect?”
She answered with mirth,” Do you mean to reject?”
He answered My Lady with you I long to have sex,
it is just your husband I do not want to see next”,
He had removed his coat and shirt, his muscles he flexed,
she scurried to the bed, he jumped in naked next.
Her corset and pantaloons were gone,
not a stitch did she have on.
This had been her plan all the night long,
a bird in a wicker cage was whistling a song,
the fireplace sent sparks of light in tune to the song.
#5 The Tavern
Lady of Consequence
Lady Mercy did not like being aroused from her
lover’s delightful presence regal
still she was the mistress of the
house and Thurman's substance,
in a some what loose way of speaking, yet legal.
Divorce had come to mind of late,
as late as that morning in fact
as she lay so comfortable against
the warm broad back of Lamar so sate.
Divorce was not well thought of in her society
and her husband was of some
reckoning with the courts it was his forte,
he could leave her with out a penny to her name.
Nothing to do but kiss the old bastards butt again
and get on his good side if she could find one.
" good morning dear,
I hope you rested well through the night"
She Dazzled him with a fake smile
and kissed him on the side of his face the right,
no where near the mouth,
no telling where it might have been,
and he hadn’t had his toilet again.
As yet." Yes" he mumbled
" quiet a good night my self, and you?
Are you enjoying your solitary chambers"
She sighed and motioned for the maid Lou
“Bring me hot tea, foolish girl should
know by now to have it ready
when she came down. "Did you go out
My dear" Her husband ask with a smirk on his face.
‘”Well so I did my darling, just for a
ride about the better part of the town,
just to sight see you know didn't see anyone no how"
"Oh," He exclaimed " sight seeing is it now?"
“Is what Now my dear"
He heaved himself up from his chair ,
walked to the fire place to warm his backside,
poked at the burning logs with the iron poker,
looked at it with undue sincerity for a moment ,Joker.
Long enough to give Lady Mercy pause to wander what he was getting at.
Was he having her followed, or getting a report from her driver?
She would have his hide and his wife out of the house and in the river
. " Yes dear,” she answered, when one goes out alone in the carriage.
One goes sight seeing out of rustiness, it will disparage.
And the need to see some one beside servants
all day and night the need I do carry.”
"She was getting testy, which made him believe
his information had been correct after all,
she was playing him for a fool!
Consorting with Tavern beggars and hussy’s.
What would this cost him?
He would pay dearly if she had been an indiscreet fool.
His own behavior was above reproach,
his little escapades were very discreet ,
never in the public eye, did they meet.
.He would be very sharp and direct with her again.
Bring up divorce and that sort of disgrace fan,
A Lady would not want to be caught up with, but use force,
he would be quiet liberal with her, because of her family of course.
Her father held the pulse of the political flow
in the house of Commons, he must remember that,
yes he must go slow.
Would have to be very careful with Mercy,
her father was quiet fond of her and thought her happy, curse it.
The Lady Mercy was sitting quietly, taking her tea and Toast,
waiting for him to make his move, the incident with the poker had not eluded her,
for a moment she was almost frightened she would roast,
She really must talk with Father.
If Thurman became violent he would have to leave the house,
After all was family waters.
Her father had made him what he was
and she could see him broken just as easily.
Lamar would be better suited as Lord of the Manor than he,
who thought he could lay down the law to her.
She would see him again, tonight if she chose, and she did prefer.
She would be going out again, in the late evening after sending the
Coachman to see who was taking their ease at the Tavern.
There that was settled, and she must tell the maid
not to use those silk sheets confound her,
they were a bit difficult to lye on while making love,
the pillows seemed to want to slip right off the bed like a dove,
with Lamar hanging on for dear life,
poor thing, he was so exhausted,
didn’t even have a chance for tea delight,
before Old Foxy over there interrupted their reverie,
well she would put a bug in her maids ear from her to me,
"from now on she would know what the old fox was up to
or that poker might just rest upside someone else’s head, like you."
With out another word between them Lady Mercy
took herself back up to her chambers to have her bath
and start to prepare for the night’s festivities,
she might just dance some tonight have a spree,
her foot tapping had reminded her what it was like to whirl around the floor
on the arm of a handsome man, one who belonged to someone else she was sure,
or there was something wrong with him,
maybe that was it, maybe there was something wrong with the man so slim
Maybe he was destitute. He might not have a penny in his pocket,
but what did that matter when he had the other thing right there , a rocket,
worth a lot of gold to a Lady of Consequence like her self.?
How better to spend her husbands money than on
a good rump with a viral young handsome man? Husband on the shelf.
