Savannah Poems II (White Egret)

Missing image
Pearlescent plumage
Whiter than the waxen lilies
Painted on the darkling waters
You strutted your stuff like a
Catwalk model
Long legs striding effortlessly
Head held high...so proud.

Mute and immutable
Secure in your wetlands wilderness
A child of this salt stung marsh
Its watercourses, reed beds
Shimmering sunsets, sights, and smells
Etched deep within your memory.

You grew tired of posing for the camera
Unfurled your angel wings
Jumped lightly onto the breeze’s back
And flapped a languid lap
Alighting on an overhanging branch.

Perched motionless as a moment caught in time
You looked beyond reflections
Mirrored on the still water
Saw deep, deep, deep
Found what most eyes fail to see.

Silvered water droplets splashed skyward
Cascading spectrums of light
As your orange dagger beak
Stabbed down, down, down
A silvery fish struggled in vain.

You showed your artistry
Your deadly accuracy
Your poetry of sublime elegance
Ten minutes, ten strikes
Ten fewer fish swimming amongst the lily pads.

The Alligator drifted closer
Suspended in the clear water
A menacing reptilian reminder
Of your fragile beauty
But you were too quick for him
Too much in love with life
Too full of hope
To let cruel fate destroy you.

Author notes

The imagery of this incredible white bird was amazing and I knew I would have to write about it.

I'm here to learn, you are all poets so I respect your criticism.

She was beautiful. She stood three feet away from me, like she was showing off.

They move with impossible grace do they not? Rather freakish in design but perfect for their purpose. Birds come in the most amazing array of shapes, forms and colors. You gave this bird a great review!

I especially love the romantic tone set in the first two stanzas. Later on I really enjoyed the repetition (deep & down), it pulled me along.

Alot of wonderful descriptive imagery in here, excellent word choices and all of it combines to show a reverence for nature and the world around us. You definitely see the world through poetry.

Thank you for your kind comments. I value these words from a poet whose work I admire so much.
Writing this poem was a real joy. I had been there and seen it and the imagery was vibrant and brilliant in my mind’s eye. I suspect my poetry is too narrative in form but this is because I like to read my poetry to an audience and I want to paint pictures in their imaginations.
