books with plastic markers holding the last pages
Waiting for the reader to return, but never does
wondrous places created here -in the mind
A pool with sparkling water enticing the tree frogs,
-come, dive from the branch that stretches
inward beyond the pools edge, to the floating tube
hidden from the human eyes, hearing them at night
Dogs bark in the distance, chasing
dreams; of tossed out chicken bones
Discarded, there just for the taking
hiding them for later, digging up old ones
The day seems long, I take a walk
along the dirt path leading to the pavement
A winding road accompanied by the melodies
of the creek, gentle waterfalls along the way
Rain falls like sprinklers on a well tended golf course
smelling of honeysuckle and forrest floor
Bears have crossed this path many times before,
and I have yet to meet them on foot, perhaps they are smart
Smells of slow roasted meats and backyard grills,
none of which are close enough to partake
Drift with pleasant smoke, like offerings to the Gods
occasionally hearing a familiar "hello" and smiling along the way
Author notes
I could never describe the peaceful place where I live, but this comes close. And I have seen bears cross the very road I speak of...but never while I am on foot! They are timid and gentle here, just like the people.

Two thumbs up!
I only wish I knew where this tree was. Perhaps the bears are indeed smart. I like the odors compared to offerings to the gods. My only criticism would be the word forest is mispelled. (I do hate to critique but I respect your work enough to be honest if that matters to you.) I live in the desert and dream of places like this, however I do love my drifting sands.

Yes, thank you for pointing that out to me! I don't know what has happened lately. I used to be a top speller, but since I have been doing poetry on AP, I have slipped for some reason?
I'm glad you like my poem. Everything in it describes my surroundings at home. -

I looked up the spelling of the word forrest, and it shows as 2 r's?? I'm not sure about it, but I'll look it up again.

Evocative!
Wow! You put me there! I could smell the memories of picnics and barbeques, sense the shyness of 800 lb furry neighbors, the green smell of creeks and woods...sounds like you live in Eden!

genle yet invigourating
Oh what a gentle but mentally invigourating journey I have been on by courtesy of your wonderous poem. I live on one of the edges of the city of Liverpool England It has its own kind of beauty but Mother Nature knows how to do things properly. We get the occasional visit from a fox and the variety of visiting birds sometimes leaves me breathless.
I like you medley of different aroma and your bouquet of sights and sounds.
From time to time when things medical face me ,when there is no anaesthetic I take myself on a journey ,in my mind of places I have been. With your permission I should like to take this poem to calm me and soothe the parts that need soothing
Thank you .I wish that I had more applauds to send to you
You would be very welcome if you wished to visit my poetry. In friendship Rhygirl60

So lazy and nice...
From the first line ( which reminded me of the first line of one of the first lines of the Eclogues, by the great Roman poet Virgil -'Under the spreading chestnut) right through to the end, suggesting another Classical reference, that your ordinary BBQ resembles a burnt offering (with the implication that the accompanying wine or lager is a libation to the Gods!) - all though I liked this understated style. Lucky writer, living in such a nice place! Well done!

Well, thank you so much for that comment. I had no idea it resembled anything else, but I will certainly look it up and compare the two. And, yes, I am very fortunate to live in such a place

A wonderfully descriptive piece. Your place of residence must be a place of serenity and piece. Congratulations on the silver.

I love bears ... this is a lovely write. I read about the brown bear. When the Alpha male gets old, it shows in his paw prints (he walks slower and with more weight) other males take notice and gang up on him ... then when he is killed, they fight and the winner takes all. It was very sad to watch. We are all tired though as you say here.

Thank you, I will! Driving home yesterday, I put my window down to hear the waters rush across the big rocks beneath the falls. That smell is so fresh and wonderful!

"Dogs bark in the distance, chasing
dreams; of tossed out chicken bones
Discarded, there just for the taking
hiding them for later, digging up old ones"
I liked this stanza the best. It made me hope to be a dog in my next life:they know that simple pleasures are the best. This was very relaxing to read and the dicriptions are so apt, I almost feel as if I've been there. Of course, I'm from bear country myself and my spirit guide is a she-bear so no wonder I felt at home in this wonderful poem.

Well, thank you very much! Yea, my dog has a good life. We live in such peaceful surroundings and plenty of good tossed out bones! I brought her a ham bone a couple of days ago and she devoured it! I'm a little cautious of the bear, but they don't seem to bother me. Maybe my spirit guide is a bear!!
Take care my friend!
