Sweet November

“By the People, for the people, justice for all,
trust me to uphold this sacred creed,
carved in that aged stony wall.”

At his words the great host did cheer,
and waved their signs high in the air
and shook his hand when he came near

I’d heard that spiel a time or two before.
But once in office the bucks start to flow,
and big business buys them another corporate whore

To me he seemed shifty and came across as sly,
had pat answers for my questions
and wouldn’t look me in the eye

“I see he’s for me,” the blind man he did smile.
“He sounds confident and capable.
A man you can count on to go that extra mile”

The deaf mute, to whom nothing made sense,
had no opinion at all. Just sat there grinning
atop the old garden fence

Busy eking a living or snorting yellow snow,
some couldn’t be bothered with issues
and said they just didn’t know.

It takes a heap of money, to buy into that big show,
and it seems that only crooks have got enough,
so they’re our only choices, before winters big blow.

I couldn’t vote for that guy, he didn’t have my trust,
I picked the honest one, who was dumb as a post,
but I’d done my duty, as I felt I must.

The lesser of two evils; it always seems that way.
Most, never voting for, but only against,
when they go to the polls on Election Day.

I can’t fix the problem, the solutions beyond me,
but this is my country; the land of my birth,
so I’ll give up one suggestion and this ones for free.

It’s a simple little thing that everyone will love
Just add another line to the ballot that reads,
‘None of the above’

What did you think

Never have I seen a political poem so beautifully constructed and so bloody true. The choices we have are the same as between a rock and a hard place. I reckon they have a nerve calling it a democracy. It will have to do until we get something better.
    A genuine pleasure to read.

    So True!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good morning. You have written an excellent poem about our political parties. We don't get much of a choice, the pickings are mighty slim. A pleasure to read this morning. loved these lines...
