I am different

I am different
I am still
Mother says that I am ill
But special like an autumn rose
The season where the reaper grows.
I am not like little Jill
Who sat upon her window sill
Until a breeze blew her away
And to the pavement had her say.
But I a holy witness true
Would never lie to she or you
For what I am would be quite lame
If I should be only the same.

I am different
To a tee
And not so much like you
I eat my medicine like a sweet
And scream much less than others do
Should a widow make a ghastly nest
In Sunday teacher's shoe.
But I a saint like Michael stand
A clean and empty palm and hand
Absolved of guilt like a baby doe
Shot full of shrapnel, losing its glow
Yet I am different
Through and through
No I am not the same as you

I am different
Wait and see
Or try to prove me wrong
And all in time the world of sheep
Shall come to sing my song
And find that fate surrounds me
With an omen sure and strong
To hold that I am different
And drag the rest along.
Do let my manner
Alarm you, not one bit
For those who aren't different
In their places they should fit
And should they pull and struggle
Or in my difference mock
The whims of fate shall cut their thread
Until the world's forgot.
