in case you don't recall
i will remind in you semaphore and other ways
of 'waving not drowning'
- maybe an ode to stevie smith
whose lovely legs did paddle in my brain long ago
when she showed how easily you can forge poetry
through roughened skin and the sores of childlike talking
we: talked
& paried swordfish vowels
enunciating our rivalry of blood-bonded mother & child
- i wind a bobbin of string in your heart
so you will be gretel
able to find your way home
we: never say the P word
in case a promise is broken
or the S word
for then we would be sorry
finding each other
not to tied with ribbon or bow
again, we read each other
like poetry
- long ago
i paddled in your bones
and made your blood
now my skin scuffs on the softer side
awoken by your call
- we are both sorry and will promise another day to smile

well i don't know of stevie smith, but i do know about having the heated rows with the daughter. i have one and very opiniated and bossy. she is 38, but still a brat, but i like the way we agree to disagree. your daughter sounds wonderful. she has to be with a wonderful mother such as you.

Must have been in the stars this weekend, me and my daughter had a major row this weekend too. But I couldn't write it like you, this is so good hon.

the love here is stronger than ribbons and bows, despite the occasional fights. this just made this mother's heart go soft with smiles, gilly...beautiful

"i paddled in your bones"
What an inherently plausible phrase this is, Gill...one all mothers & daughters will recognize as being utter truthfulness. Yes, people do argue, as that means you succeeded in raising an individual, not a clone. Still, there are bonds between you that can never be broken. I wish my mom was still here to argue with...but she never did like conflict much. We were far more alike than either of us cared to recognize, yet I got the best parts of her, too. Beautiful, Sweetie. I liked the reference to Stevie Smith, as well. Not that many on AP even know of her. I am not surprised that you do, my Friend.
