When A Door Just Slammed in Your Face

Yes, it will happen...

sometimes it is fated to be,

and cannot be avoided...

predestined, you might say...

perhaps it was your fault,

you went beyond the sensiblilities of the other,

could not gauge feelings,

perhaps misjudging the other altogether...

perhaps it was the other, who,

maybe not having specifically planned it,

did it simply out of habit,

living many disappointments,

or sport, having purchased a handguide...

Now you stand there,

the door does not reopen, and the day has ended.

Do you pass quick judgment

in reflexive defense, and make accusations?

Was the other really flighty, demanding, snippy,

and childishly unstable,

or was it something that you just did not see,

or understand, about the other,

leading to inadvertent hurt and insult?

If you had not had any successful relationships before,

then you would naturally conclude that latter...

and if you had, and feel pretty certain it must be the former,

but have an exact-seeking mind,

then you will never fully rule the latter out until the math is done...

Then again, it could have been just the wind

that blew the door shut...

    Perhaps a broken hinge

Excellent emotional repertoire. Deeply thought, introspectively expressive, then there was that last line---wit and circumstance. Superb!

fine title for a book, "Wit and Circumstance" (must google it to see if it's already taken...) nope- you were completely original...! (and this is another 'drawn from a trying relationship' piece... the 'trying' in trying to understand the other...)

        More once-in-a-lifetime

So, once again, a once-in-a-lifetime event occurs because of you! Yes, "Wit and Circumstance" would fit you quite well (thank goodness you don't want to call it "pithy wit and circumstance"!). Well, thank random coincidence! We've waxed creative through comments---and oh the book-signing! I must be there when you do that!

well, surprise surprise...it really was the wind

that shut the door, but what an enlightening

piece of poetry you've written while waiting

    for it to open again...

    love, lane

I am sure it was just the wind that blew the door shut. Relationships can be very savage but at the same time gentle. When one fails, it is not the fault of either, (as a lot of pointing is done on both sides) it is just that neither were on the same road and destiny leads people. (But the wind does have a lot to do with it!!!!)

  • i love this. the ending is made me smile. wise words... blame the wind

and that very last realization was critical, for in this case it was said to be the wind that blew the door shut (at least I want so hard to believe it so...)
