For five long years
You stood by my side
Held secrets, desires,
Saw through my pride.
For five long years
You saw through my mask
To the deepest parts of my heart
An impossible task.
For five long years
You looked up to me
With those shiny black eyes
That will forever linger in my memory.
For five long years
You never doubted
That I could live my dreams
No matter what others shouted.
For five long years
You kept my diary
Pages of raw emotion
Soaking it all in without inquiry.
For five long years
You were my faithful companion
Not pet, but best friend
When I was lingering on the edge of a canyon.
In five short years
You lived and you died.
The moment you were gone
Heavens, earth and I cried.
Author notes
I wrote this poem two hours after my companion of five years, Panda, was taken from this earth. This is the best way I know to pay tribute to such a loving animal. Please comment.

Awww...good, but sad! Your use of repetition gets a stronger reaction out of the reader...I should know
