The solitude is what pulls so many towards the ocean. It's not that the sunrises aren't beautiful enough because if you've ever seen one from the back of your board, you'd crave that feeling for the rest of your life. But sometimes, I think it can just be that feeling you get when you're standing at the edge of a churning surf. A world beyond where the blues and the greens melt into the sapphire hues of the sky, currents of life, culture, history, adventure.. it's all right there, flirting with your toes.
And the world seems to lack on how the ocean exists. Each wave that is ridden can take you almost anywhere. They seem to wash away the sting of everyday life and your hopes and dreams somehow always find room to breathe again.
Sometimes the waters grow dark and the seas become rough, but the iniquitous threat of hurricanes, the inevitable lessons of rip tides, the quietness of being caught under a wave, and the lurking shark that's always in the back of your mind, all fade into nothing when you let the waves crash into you and stir your soul. They speak in a language you've been so desperatly trying to figure out and everything suddenly makes sense. The moments stop moving and you just are. And for a little while, that's good enough.

Author notes
I tried to write lyrics for this contest, but I could only get out the music. The words in my head just wouldn't come out right and this came instead.

This may be prose, but it's very poetic prose and a worthy winner - congratulations!

Sometimes the waters grow dark and the seas become rough - aye, but that's fine, we are as strong as light in the sparkle of an eye so the dark times can come, shoot all over our bellies, and we can wipe it away and make music.

I LOVED IT! the contest was to express the ocean/seas in any way shape or form and so far this has actually spoken best to me.
"A world beyond where the blues and the greens melt into the sapphire hues of the sky, currents of life, culture, history, adventure.. it's all right there, flirting with your toes. "
that line is AWESOME!

very nice
very nice piece keep it coming -
Yes I love the ocean and that is one of three places i would love to be every three days .
The descriptions you used were very nice and it described it like I remember it and , yes , when your there , you dont even think of what you have to do , what you were doing and that you actually have a life outside of that peace, you get when at that great body of water. You did very well with this and even though you tried for lyrics you still came out with something great, thanks and continue for you have a gift. -
So peaceful
Well, you know how I love the ocean and just standing there in the waves, sometimes for hours, and getting caught up in the magic of that particular part of time. You're caught that magic so well and so descriptively here - there's just something being there, so simple and yet so very complex. Well done - very well done.
Hugs and love and good luck in the contest,
Grampa Paul
