Hold My Hand

You held my hand,
So small and frail.
And sang me to sleep,
When I’d cry and wail.

You held my hand,
For those first steps I took.
And held me up,
When my little legs shook.

You held my hand,
At school that first day.
I clung to your leg,
And begged you to stay.

You held my hand,
When middle school came.
You brought me my lunch box,
Screaming out my name.

You held my hand,
As I left with my diploma.
Then packed up my things,
And drove off in my new Tacoma.

You held my hand,
And walked me down the aisle.
Even though you cried,
You always kept that smile.

You held my hand,
When I had a big fight.
You always let me in,
No matter what time of night.

You held my hand,
When my first son was born.
And rocked him to sleep,
When I was tired and worn.

Now I hold your hand,
And try hard to fight back the tears.
Just like you always did,
Through all of those many years.

I hold your hand,
As I watch you fade away.
I cling to your body, crying,
And desperately beg you to stay.

I hold your hand,
As crying relatives shuffle by.
You always said the hardest part of life,
Was learning to say goodbye.

Please tell me what you think
