The Water-well,... who?

In the middle of the old orchard
there is a water-well where you can see
your birth, your life, your death,
where you can find answers
to all of life’s questions.
Don’t ask where it is, don’t go there
if you do not dare to drink from it.
There you will find many lost souls
with empty pottery in their hands
walking around and around,
they spent their time, their life.

My legs heavy,
somebody cut the strings to my balloons
and I was not hovering anymore, I couldn’t fly
and I reached the ground with difficulty.
Burning arrows of fear pierced me.
I kneeled to drink,
my hands reached over the edge
and my cup was full with clear, fresh water.
It was cold and it boiled at the same time,
scorching and healing my entrails.
With the first sip I thought I would die.
Dark creatures came to my side,
watching me, surprised.
From their lips dry sighs kept coming my way.
I screamed to ask who is there?!
Well’s walls of stone and moss
hungrily absorbed my voice
before it slowly returned backwards,
like somebody turned an old coat inside out
there is who!
Then... the moment of silence.

It was only my face’s reflection
upon the dark, calm, silvery surface.
Somebody held my hand and pulled me away,
not allowing me to look there again.
Behind my back somebody started chanting
accompanied by the rattling sound of empty pots of clay.

Author notes

Don't ask where this came from... at least, I am a poet and writer and everything is possible.

Sometimes No name fears are the worst enemy of us. (my own quote)

    WONDERFUL!!!

The old adage, the darkness within us all, is what your poem reminds me of I often have dreams during the night of dark and mysterious things. 's

There is a famous saying by Nietzsche which I think this poem delves into rather deeply, my Friend. It is a stark piece, laden with dark, profound imagery. A very worthy entry into the contest, Sweetie.

“Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster,
and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”
    ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

  • This came from deep within you. This is very dark. Your imagery here is really very good too and seeps into the mind of the reader.

There is an ominous feel to this piece of yours that I like very much. Good luck in the contest. This was very very good.

    Dark Wishes
