I know, I should dig a moat,
construct granite walls
place a few parapets
at strategic points;
hire a few archers and knights
and men-at-arms
to protect my kingdom
from roving bands of marauders…
Or, just make me a sign,
a Ranch-X sign,
a Castle Dave sign
to show there is love here
maybe even contentment
where someone is passing his last days away…
My possessions are not 'things',
no, though that is what you may perceive;
my possessions are memories,
though they are fading fast…
they are 'things to do',
projects, you know, to keep me young...
Bill here is a good guy,
I mean Ted, no, John…
what’s you name again, fella?
Anyway, he says some of you write poetry
and will write about me…
Ah, and what grand epics shall I inspire?
If not a poem,
then write me a retirement village proposal,
for I think I have a good business opportunity here-
plenty of places to sleep,
lots of recreation…
good weather to pass one's last days…
Or how about an artist’s retreat?
No? A poet’s retreat, then-
they say poets can find inspiration in just about anything…

Ethereal sense and a full-course dinner
Your writing shows enriching imagination. You took us on a journey through historic-era imagery and created an ethereal feeling for the set of pictures, and tied it up with what inspires artistic creation. That was quite a task, but it is enjoyable to read and to imagine, and it is a full-course dinner for thought.

This is an appealing narrative - you have a great grasp on dialogue and I found the end about writing a retirement proposal amusing.

Liked this the best of the poems in this contest. Has a sense of real life and a particular moment. Goes from the mundane to a bigger idea and is understandable and easy to read the whole way.

From his picture, you seem to have captured his thoughts. That of a man who has seen a lot and doesn't take himself over seriously. Interesting perspective. Kudos!

Awww I love it! How sweet!

I love this, and so will David.... he's an avid reader, two of the four of his trailers are literally filled with books. Very perceptive piece here. Doesn't he seem to crackle with energy?
And yes, every one of his pieces of "junk" has a story...
at least one...
We sit around listening to Johnny Cash all day.
Thank you for this entry.

Books? well then, a "Dave's Library, Open to Public" sign might be in order... or "Dave's Fantasy Kingdom, $5 Tours" lol (tell him to install a rollercoaster)
