When all around are sleeping
The sentry is at his post
Alert to every danger
Full well he knows its cost
His comrades grab what sleep they can
Will this war come to an end
Maybe one day in the future
We'll regard each other as friend
For now the battle rages
Its either kill or you'll be killed
Its not what I expected
But duty must be fulfilled

Superb
'tis a very fine write, indeed. You expressed your ideas quite well. Also reminded me of my own series on War. Thanks for sharing. -
It was over my head
This is one of your poems that I had read several times, but never commented on. I had felt that I couldn't find words to describe it's affect, so I thought it was "over my head". I do see the muse on the futility of war, but I felt I should say more about it. It's just the frightfulness of the picture I suppose. Having served in the medical corps during the first Persian Gulf War and seeing some casualties (absolutely nothing as horrific as your picture), it definitely altered my perception of war. Yet as you stated, I served, as "duty must be fulfilled"---it is the oath you take. Sorry, no grand words of wisdom this time, just tragic truth.

Thanks Jane
All too often we see the futility of war...it rips families apart...destroys thousands of ordinary lives and jobs...crushes the spirits of those under attack...causes traumas that will stay with many troops long after the battles have been fought...night terrors...minds disturbed forever...limbs lost...friends left only in memory...and for what?...an ideal...a political need...expediency?
One day there will be an accounting when the Generals and leaders of the Earth will be called to book to explain the carnage caused by their command...will Man ever rise to the heights he is so capable of?...at this time it seems but a distant dream that flows through the river of Time itself...waiting for the day when all weapons are turned into ploughshares!...thanks for your valued and respected comments...Dan xx

Dad,
You got that right! war is futile. I think we have lost sight of why this one started to begin with..... and that is a shame. You really did a great job on this one!

Amen to that...war is futile. I think the leaders of the countries should put on boxing gloves and duke it out...forget sending innocent people out to kill other innocent people!
