full fathom five our summer dies

where did you go?

I looked in the seagrass and the cloudtops;
but I am little bo beep in this game.

if I let the sky down
from my weary shoulders,
will you be shaken from
your perch in heaven
and tumble down?

will the zeniths shatter
on baked july earth
and crack the ground
down to the core of hell?
will you be carried up
with the lava flow?

-

remember when you taught me
how to fly, and we had
just five minutes of freedom?
you told me it seemed like seconds;
I thought it had been forever.
you laughed. 'there's no such thing
as forever.'

'there is when people are in love,' I told you.

you grew wings and never came back;
were you icarus, flying to safety,
challenging the sun,
falling to water?

-

we recited poetry at the beach,
let our words fall as grains of sand
slipping from our fingers.

'full fathom five thy lover lies,
of her bones are coral made...'

we went to the ocean in summer and
you swam so far out that I couldn't see you.

'those are pearls that were her eyes,
nothing of her that doth fade,
but doth suffer a sea-change,
into something rich and strange...'

I ducked into the water and peered
with open eyes; you dove
so deep, and stared at
the sun.

'sea nymphs hourly ring her knell.
hark now I hear them, ding-dong bell.'

I looked, too.
maybe it was the moon;
I could never tell.

-

will you come back
when the time hangs ripe
like the silver fruit of eden?

- caught in summertime

Author notes

prompt: aestival -- pertaining to summer

obviously, the part in quotes, 'full fathom five thy lover lies,' etc., is a tweaked version of some shakespeare stuff, recited by ariel in the tempest.

  • I have never seen a poet so young with that much talent. I would have prefered you to have written a poem that was all yours, but what you did was good. Nice write hope all is well
