Blackened Tears

I can still remember rope burn and the bruises on your arm, and knowing that they were there because of me. Serrated, sharp and weeping wounds, and I'd laugh at myself as you told me i'd die. I remember ribs rattled with screaming and hating you for stopping me.

I remember cold nights lay awake with pain killers to knock me out, and the thought that any day soon could be the end. Disinfectant and glasses of tap water never smelled better than when mama was at the pub. I remember painting my lips blue in the mirror.

I remember thanking you through blackened tears, and you wiped my cheek and laughed about my makeup, knowing I hid behind it. I cut off all my hair and bought a gypsy skirt, so I could be happy, and we played hopscotch again. I remember being reinvented.

And until now, I remember nothing but candy-eyes and spray-painted morals, and times we'd sit and laugh about the past- But we never mentioned that day, which is sad because the grass was freshly cut and you looked beautiful in your new uniform.

I remember you & me, and early evening,
And as I cover the dark rings beneath my eyes,
I find myself momentarily wishing to be back there.

Author notes

About remembering a time I tried to kill myself, and my friend saved me. Because I'm not happy, and it came flooding back to me. Never again, though, don't worry.
