I saw the end before the dream
and drawing closer still;
a looming cloud molded in sleep
and fluffed with candied pills.
So sweet, so toxically they taste
with rotting bed-time smells.
This is all I know of parting,
and all I need as well.

Author notes

Option 2: Inspired by Emily Dickinson's poem, "Parting."
Image: Emily Dickinson's portrait, as depicted on the mural at West Cemetery.

I made certain it could be sung to the tune, "yellow rose of texas"

    A melancholy penning, Poet, inspired by the depths of the Belle's numerous works. Well done. I have this same picture on my list, "Inspired by Emily Dickinson", as well as many others, including various sources of information. I also receive emails from the Amherst Museum.

  • Very cute and you did really well with your rhyme scheme in this piece. It flows as lovely as a song read aloud
