Well Dressed Man

Missing image
[Song]

Well dressed man with the immaculate tan
You’d like to think you’ve got the world at your feet
The job’s well paid so you got it made
As you laugh at all the people you meet

I see you drive through the city
With your favourite little kitty
And you know she’s such a pretty thing

You want everyone to know
How you’re runnin’ the show
And see you sparkle like a diamond ring

But between you and I
I see the locks on your doors, you’ve got something to hide
Who do you run to, Mister, when you find you’ve got nothing inside?

Yeah between you and I
I see you running from the truth, you know you’re living a lie
You never learned to fall, and now you’ve burned that sparkle in your eye

And that’s the bed you made
But you ain’t getting much sleep
That’s the price you pay
For thinking talk was cheap

And now you can’t get up
And can’t let nobody see you
So you drink from the cup
Though it couldn’t really be you

You’re such a well dressed man

Oh you bragged ‘bout how you had a girl for every day of the week
Insisting all the while that this is really what you seek
But a little birdie tells me you can’t concentrate for long
Always making your excuses, still pretending nothing’s wrong

I know your reputation matters more than life itself
Got to blind those little people with your style and with your wealth
And show you don’t need nothing but your finely groomed reflection
‘Cause you’d rather face the bitter end than deal with their rejection

But between you and I
I see the lump in your throat from when you swallowed your pride
Tell me who do you seek at midnight when you go for a ride?

Yeah, between you and I
I know behind your walls you’ve got no alibi
So tell me how does it feel when you’re choking on your piece of the pie?

Well that’s the bed you made
But you ain’t getting much sleep
You never learned to swim
And now you’re in too deep

Yeah and it’s hard to breathe
But you won’t let the mask slip
You know each time you falter
It could be your last trip

And you struggle to remember
Who you’re pretending to be
And there’s noone to turn to
No more fish in the sea

And that’s the price you pay
For throwing every stone
And that’s the harvest you reap
For all the seeds you’ve sown

But you’re a well dressed man
With your life in your hands
Such a well dressed man
How could they understand?

How would they understand?

Author notes

It'll be a while before I record this so I hope the meter changes and timing can be understood in the meantime. There's a pause (musical fill) before "But between you and I" and the song is not so much sung as it is spoken in a Dylanesque or bluesy vocal style. Hope you enjoy it.

    Lawdy!

You are really gonna have to start singin' these things for us to hear! I am a fan of your song lyrics. They rock!

This is even better than the song I read earlier and I was fairly smitten with that first one! Best wishes.

  • I absolutely love this poem. You sent out such a powerful message with so simple words, it left me speechless.
    A standing ovation for you!

  • Humz.. Nice Write.
but it's such a long one and its a bit dry
    I lost my interest completely
    anyway
    keep writing

    by
the poet of hearts and beautiful words

    • Ah, my first highly unimpressed response (though I'm thrown by your applause and initial compliment).

Well it's re-assuring to know that not everybody will like all that I write - wouldn't want to start getting complacent now. I'm surprised you found it to be long, though; bear in mind that this is a song and in no way a poem - in fact I doubt it'll make it far past the three minute mark when I do eventually record it. I don't suppose it'll win you over, but I'll give you a shout when I upload the recording because, as I say, it's not intended to be read on screen as a work of poetry and I think the musical backing and vocal delivery will add to this one tremendously.

Anyway, I appreciate your unyielding honesty, honest. Nice suit, by the way ;-)

      • oh, I'm sorry if made you feel bad or sad.
and I would love to hear the song. please don't forget to send me link
        again sorry

        • No, no not at all! I meant it when I said I appreciate your honestly - I wouldn't want anything less, so you have nothing to apologise for. I'd much rather somebody leave a comment saying my song/poem wasn't to their liking than receive no feedback at all.

I will let you know but I wouldn't hold your breath, because I can't seem to settle on a chord progression for it (and my guitar playing needs a fair bit of work to say the least).

Anyway, I greatly appreciate your consideration. Take care!

  • BEAUTIFUL!

I loved this! The whole poem was simply amazinG! Just WOW! =]

  • so interesting, and it says everything that is needed to be said as well as it is very well worded.

  • Outstanding

I thought this worked really well as a lyric. I liked the way you reflected on his life and showed it to be empty despite the fast cars and the nice suit. People are not always who they first appear. I think this would sound good with a few guitars in the background.
