We Shall Rise Again

They drove us down way back then,
but to this day it still is held
that the South shall rise again!

This wasn't about slavery so much
as fighting in what you believed in,
whether the state or national government

Held more power, and what was more
important than where you lived and
with whom - your family, kith and kin?

Common mistake that so many make
was this was all about racism; sure, the
debate was the spark the set the fight off,

But that fight was long in coming.
Learn your history well or repeat it!
The spirit of the South still lives...

For cause and comrade, a Confederacy
of states over a dictatorial governement -
so many hot-heads just dove right in...

And who paid in the long run?
For the northern army was largely made
of immigrants, just coming to the country,

Not finding a job and needing something
to do and live for; the south, we paid with
our own dear blood that had been settled many a year...

Black regiments on both sides, women soldiers
in diguise, spies from north and south -
it seems quite redundant now, but truthfully,

Something was started that was never finished:
the nation was reunited as a whole, but people's
roles greatly changed since then all because

The north did win; yet I tell you, the South has
a spirit within that shall rise again: belief in its
people, honor towards them, and integrity.

That's what makes it key - the north is losing that.
"A nation that aborts its children has no future..."
So said Pope John Paul II - the south still has children,

Rich in heritage - roots and wings combined, the
South shall rise again in stride and take over where
the north did fail to win...

Author notes

jumbled thoughts of just about every angle of the war and its effects are written here - it's ok if you don't understand some of it...as a history major from WWU, I tend to ramble on a bit

Thank you for writing about the Civil War, the subject is one demanding meticulous study. It was the immigration statement that drew me in here. Grammatically, there is a small error in "But that fight was long in coming." The "B" shouldn't be capitalized. Here is interesting fact:

"Ironically, after the Civil War, it was Davis's cigar holder and coffee maker that turned up in the White House. At an auction of the possessions of deposed Confederate aristocrats, Lincoln's successor, Andrew Johnson...purchased Davis's unusual ceramic train that held several cigars by wire and also percolated coffee (Cigar Aficionado, 2009).
