From Your Father

I'm sorry, dear, it seems I missed
your simple sweet sixteen,
but, love, know that I saw you there
and cried true tears of joy.

You graduated from High School,
and though you did not see me there
I watched, so proud, remembering
when you learned to write your name.

You thought I'd be disappointed,
when you left college behind,
and though I was, my true desire
was that you were happy, no matter.

You became an EMT,
braver than I could ever be.
You cried at my not being there,
for all your proud moments like this.

You carried on saving lives
And I would brag about you,
every day, that woman,
you had magnificently become.

Your wedding day arrived,
my beautiful baby, all grown up.
But someone else read all my lines,
it was not I raised a cup.

Again you cried, though for others
you bravely smiled.
Why isn't he here to dance with me?
And you cursed me, breaking my heart.

I watched you lose the man you loved,
and the child he helped you bear.
I cried with you, and wished, dearly
to be holding you through that pain.

I see you bravely living life,
and my pride, it overwhelms.
You are everything I had hoped
you'd be, and sometimes even more.

I beg that you remember, always
if I could be with you, down there I would.
But I must watch over you from here,
and cry my tears for you, in Heaven.
