For the longest time, I've been suffering from an illness.
This illness strikes anyone at any time, and is contagious.
There is no cure; it's anyone guess whether they want to be cured.
The symptoms for this illness vary in number.
This illness is like a drug that some people cannot live without.
It feels good in the beginning, but causes intense pain if misused.
This illness affects people's mental being and ability to function.
A major symptom of this illness is mood swings.
It can bring great joy now, but overwhelming sadness later.
This illness affects families and friendships, for better or worse.
It can bring loved ones together, but if misused it can tear them apart.
This illness has consumed me in ways that I didn't even think about.
Passion, romance, twinkles in both eyes, hope,
Fear, anxiety, isolation, depression, so many tears.
I suffer from all of these symptoms.
This illness has a simple, common name: love.
It's changed me negatively in appearance and demeanor in some people's eyes.
Even as this amateur poet puts fingers to keyboard,
I feel caught in between wanting the pain to stop and wanting more.
Love has given me powerful feelings for a young woman
Who has gone through difficult circumstances,
Lead me to a young adult who's long searched for a father figure,
And has made me look to the highest of beings for guidance.
Now, I look to that high being for answers,
For I'm caught between wanting a cure and remaining in suffering.
Author notes
May God help bring resolution to my life.

I really like how you mixed love as being a common illness, its so true.

Yes, love is all that you describe and more. Amazing how so many feelings can be brought on just by that one feeling called 'Love'.
Love can leave us intensly happy, or chronically sad and in despair. Love is freely given, but will it be returned?
True love is never complicated, but people tend to complicate it for the worse. And yes, if you look at it like that,
Love is an illness, for the better or worse. You have put so many of your feelings within this piece. Well done for this. You have described what you are going through well enough. Keep writing.
