They told us all of heroes
as we stood there in line.
They told us tales of glory,
then told us where to sign.
And of course we were aware
we could pay the final price.
But what they failed to tell us was
what else we'd sacrifice.
It's been over a year
since last time I was home
and you can't replace time spent there
just talking on the phone.
I make friends just to leave them
once our tour's complete.
I fall in love to break my heart-
It's oh-so-bittersweet.
I'm forced to walk away
When the Army makes us part.
For our country matters more
than matters of the heart.
I give up my freedoms,
so that you may have yours,
Curfew, policies, rules and regs-
they all come with the corps.
And so we may not die for you
But we have paid our share.
To us, it's all these "little" costs
that are hardest to bear.

This is really awesome and a piece that truly speaks to the heart. I have heard many a tale from those who have served how hard it is to be away from their loved ones and friends and can see in this write not only the feelings of need and wanting, but also the pride that follows. I really loved the rhythm of this and the flow was truly fantastic. Such sacrifices must be so hard to bear...your friends and love you found along the way washed away with your moving on...but still the love for your country keeps and makes it all worth while. There is so much in this piece that reaches out to me and I am going to bookmark this piece. Thank you so much for entering and I wish you the very best in the contest.

Having served myself I know exactly what you mean about the little cost being the hardest to bear. You have my respect my friend. Thank you for entering this in my contest.

Excellent
Very nice, I like the format. It almost made me cry at some points. I am very impressed, I usually do not like veteran poems, but this was wonderful! -
Wonderful way to let us into the real life of those who sacrifice for our freedom of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The simple things just going for a walk lost in thought or going for a drive to clear your head are denied to those who protect our lives and freedoms so i thank you as a citizen of this great country for your sacrifice! Much Love and you have wonderful POETential

A good poem, ah we as civilians I suppose, do not stop to think of the emotional aspects of people in the forces, perhaps we should tilt our heads more and see that everyone is part of humanity, we all have feelings, and careers sometimes swirl them.
