the door

There seemed to be no escape~
a wish and a prayer wasn’t
leading to any door…
the one that was supposed to open.
But he steadily walked anyway,
this man of conviction,
toward something he could not see...
holding his head high
even as his heart was dropping.

~

Her inner chest pounded, reminding him
that no riches could steal her heart away
or separate the chambers
that kept blood flowing to his golden one…
her heart and spirit would always be with him,

and a door would open...
it would.

~

He looked again,
but saw nothing…
and cried out for mercy to be his.
The Carpenter heard,
and stopped him in his tracks, saying,
‘You were looking for a door which had not yet been built.
I am hanging it on the hinges of your patience,
and sanding the roughened edges you had to endure.
I am almost finished.’

~

And his perseverance was rewarded
when he finally could see
the door~
stain-free, and ready for his knock...
while on the other side,
upon opening,

she stood

smiling,
and whispered,
‘I told you so.’

Opportunity echoed,
and in a wink and a nod,
her arms outstretched...

and he smiled, too.

Author notes

more prose, i think, but written to encourage anyone that needs to see the door of opportunity. it is there, and might not show exactly when you want it to, but it will show up.

    encouraging indeed

you have no idea how great this was to read...first, the heart metaphors and imagery were awesome! I really really liked those, and they fit beautifully. Second, the carpenter/door image you created was absolutely perfect! I could think of so many things in life where this poem would be the epitome of truth...especially if you look at it with a religious background...But it was a very encouraging read, and I really felt inspired and happy at the end. Beautiful write.

  • the door of opportunity, I suppose we have a choice to open it or to leave it closed. Very encouraging words you have penned here with a subtle deeper meaning.

Be ready to open the door. In fact, open it even when you are not ready . . . that is the act of faith.

This is so very well written and has a message of particular significance to me as I have regretted not opening some of the doors in my life.

    Excellent.

    beautifully written prose....

I truly admire your gift for metaphor. This particular stanza reminds me of Jesus giving an important lesson, which is that no opportunity exists that we can't find a way to achieve, but that it also takes a great deal of patience to endure the inevitable trials and tribulations that come along with those doors of opportunity that are out there for each and every one of us.

The door I hope to open one day soon is to publish my first novel. I'm working on it right now, but it's still a jumbled mess of research and mixed dialogue on my computer. I have a good story in mind, but the plot and dialogue is a real pain to lay out.

The important thing for me to remember as I read through this piece is that I just need to remind myself from time to time that patience truly is a virtue. I only need one publisher to say yes. I choose to look at any rejections I get as opportunities to revise.

I also love the extended pauses you often use in between your stanzas. So much of poetry is found in that empty space between the lines.

  • thanks for showing me the door
    I needed that.

  • Outstanding

This is a lovely poem that tells us to look out for new opportunities and not let them pass you by. I liked the way that you wrote this like a short story in verse and it held my attention right to the end. Another inspirational poem.

  • holy smokes!!! where do you come up with stuff like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????

that middle stanza was absolute geniousness... it was like reading some timeless classic work of art... but yours was better... .. this makes me jealous of your skills for sure...

the only thing it was missing was your trademark possesive reversal... ya know.... 'door's opportunity' .. or 'his hand's knock' ... lol

  • true love NEVER fails

i believe that with all my heart...

this is such a beautiful, hopefull poem... amazing how simple words can fill a heart with hope and joy.
